This month's news should be entitled the "law report" because our legally oriented classmates have provided most of the news. And with Law Day coming up we will, in deference to their profession, begin our report with their news.
Jeff Rogers and his wife Kris have the some-what unusual experience of sharing the same profession. But even more than that, they now share the same job! They have been appointed to joint positions of coordinating assistant U.S. attorney in Portland, Ore. The aim of this admittedly experimental appointment is to improve coordination among the Oregon Department of Justice and federal and local law enforcement agencies. Jeff left his law firm of Ransom, Rogers & Blackman to rejoin the U.S. attorney's office which he had left three years ago. Though the Oregonian editorialized about a split up of his and Kris' practice and/or marriage, Jeff reports everything is going great, so far. They have more time for family and outside interests. Jeff, if you run across Dr. Brad Harlan at the University of Oregon Medical School, say hello.
Two of our lawyer classmates report marriages this month, their own that is. JimPool married Debby Jane Stobbs at the Meeting House in Old Sturbridge Village, Sturbridge, Mass. Also present were Tim Paige,Chuck Vernon, and Gretchen Clarke's husband, Tom you-know-who. Bruce McKissock married Nina Volpe on January 10 after a nine-month romance that began at the airport where Bruce keeps his plane (that doesn't sound quite right). Nina is a pilot too, and a registered nurse. Their honeymoon was spent "down under" in Australia and New Zealand hiking, drinking beer, and doing whatever . . . whenever . . . and wherever.
Jim and Roth Modisette are sharing a legal profession, too (though not the same job). Jim is a partner with Tremaine, Shenk, Stroud & Robbins in Los Angeles, while Roth (Vassar '68) is a partner in the Los Angeles office of Pillsbury, Madison & Sutro. Jim and Roth will be vacationing in Truro on Cape Cod this summer, having built a mail-order cottage. Jim, I would suggest you ask Billy Bower to check that one out.
In case you missed Don Graves' last newsletter, we would like to repeat the news of the promotions of Ed Kuriansky and Mike Nadel. Ed was named deputy attorney general in charge of the New York State Medicaid fraud control unit, while Mike was appointed deputy chief administrator of the New York State unified court system.
The non-legal news this month includes two births. John Rollins reports the addition of Katherine to his family; son Tommy is now two. Al Anderson also had a new baby girl (the third), Courtney Melissa, born the day after Thanksgiving. Al is president of Peco Control, Inc., a manufacturer of industrial electronic controls near San Jose, Calif. Also reporting in from California is Mike Juha who, in between trips as marketing manager for General Atomic (industrial products group), body-surfs off Del Mar beach. A year ago at this time, Mike, I too was enjoying the Southern California sun. ... New Jersey, anyone?
Al Leach, who is stationed in Japan, reported back from Christmas R&R in Australia to receive his major's leaves. Congratulations, Al! And Harris Jones has spent the winter rebuilding a Piper Pacer airplane in his basement. (I don't mean to be dense, Harris, but how the hell are you going to get it out?) Harris, his wife Jeannie, and children Marc, six, and Will, four, live in Stormville, N.Y., where Harris is a researcher at I.B.M.
The final note to this month's column is a challenge. Don Ries, who provided some excellent thoughts for Don Graves' first newsletter, has announced he will be signing on with Jef Fellows for an alumni four with cox in this fall's Head of the Charles crew race. But on one condition: that Bob Serenbetz get down to 120 lbs. (no joke, Bob!). Otherwise, Don's wife Lynn will "fill in." At 105 lbs., Don swears she's the lightest cox he's ever pulled - "except for a gal at Michigan State." Don, are we rowing in a four with or without cox? Don's address for other would-be coxes or oarsmen is: Rt. 1, Box 279, Mt. Vernon, Maine, 04352.
