As this relayer prepares this month's offerings, a drop of fresh mail brings "news from the north," sent along by an Alaskan who won't make the reunion, Dick Monkman.
Dick relays that "Bob Holmes, much to everyone's amazement, is practicing law (here) in Anchorage. He heard from Peter Stark, who is now the roving reporter for a newspaper in Missoula, Mont. Starkie (last seen with Burnt Yogurt in Katmandu) was apparently in Alaska last September but successfully avoided seeing Bob, Bill Saupe '74, and myself. He disguised himself as a sober, responsible journalist while in town, which is probably why none of us recognized him on the street. Ken Monteiro was last heard from while marooned in Sweatwater, Tex., with car troubles. Mike Chiarella has completed pharmacology studies in Utah and is heading to Galveston, Tex., for the annual 12-meter sailboat races."
Scribe Monkman continues: "Judy Zimicki and myself took Crazy Lew Romer '77 skiing in the Talkeetna Mountains. Powder telemarking in a whiteout was the main event, aside from the ski jump Judy built. Judy is doing environmental consulting work, but no longer flies around in small planes counting birds. Jan Sorice has left Alaska for Chappaqua, N.Y. As for me [that's Dick], I am what is euphemistically called 'self-employed.' I passed the bar in October, however, and hope to be off relief shortly. Have a good reunion but don't expect too many Alaskans to show up. The airfare alone would equal the national debt of many Central American nations."
Thank you, Dick. What are you doing the next five years? Maybe you would like to be the next '76 relayer? Someone is needed. Very popular post.
Chip Abrahamsen, where are you? The Darveau sisters, formally of Madison, Maine, now of Boston, were wondering aloud one recent evening and I was obliged to ask.
Had a party recently, at which time John Reidy and Wendy Simila (the two most mentioned names in these columns) were cowinners of the first annual Rosie Ruiz Award for starting late, finishing the race, and taking the cake.
Well, I'm sure everyone has neglected to send relayable comments because they're planning to talk it up June 19-21. Make those last-minute plans. A great time is planned by JudyBurrows Csatari and the reunion committee. See you at the bar.
