Recently, while your secretary was thinking with nostalgia about the past, with realism about the present, and with vision about the future, an interesting sequence of events turned up. Our Class of 1917 was matriculated when Ernest Fox Nichols was the president of Dartmouth College. In our junior year Ernest Martin Hopkins became president. Next to preside was John Sloan Dickey, followed by John G. Kemeny. The next new president will be David McLaughlin '54. Is it a coincidence that an Ernest followed an Ernest and a John succeeded a John? Perhaps! Or might it not become a tradition? Does that mean that another David will follow President David McLaughlin? It may well be. That will not have much meaning to us oldsters in the class of 1917, and besides we have no David in our class. Some of our sons may be too old for consideration by the time President McLaughlin retires. If any of our grandchildren or greatgrandchildren, however, have the first name of David, they might have an opportunity to become the 15th president of Dartmouth College.
Two reunions are in store for us, which we hope will be as successful and enjoyable as always. One is the mini-reunion on September 19, 1981, for lunch with the classes of 1918 and 1919. This is the day of the Princeton game, the first of the season. The other is our 65th reunion from June 11 to 13, 1982. Perhaps our last one, for a final get-together. Plan for it, and let us make it a great one!
Best wishes to all for a pleasant summer.
