The editor of this section of the ALUMNI MAGAZINE indulged me by extending the deadline this month so I could give you a report on Class Officers Weekend in Hanover, May 1 and 2. This was an especially noteworthy one in that President Kemeny and President-elect McLaughlin both greeted us and gave talks at the luncheon meeting on Saturday. President Kemeny's was a sentimental journey through his term of office, including a great tribute to the quality of the "very bright" students in this year's College.
1933 officers who attended some of the various weekend meetings were President PageWorthington, Treasurer Sam Cunningham, Bequest Chairman Jud Pierson, Newsletter Editor Bob Fox, Campaign Coordinator WesBeattie, 50th Reunion Chairman Jeff Davis (in his apres-ski outfit of leg cast and crutches), executive committee members Jean Meek and Horace Shaw, plus your secretary. All named were accompanied, at one time or another, by their wives, except Jean Meek, naturally, and Rugen, unnaturally. Mannie and ChilantSprague were expected, but Chilant had a serious operation Friday in California. It was successful and the prognosis is excellent, to our delight.
Bob Fox, with extra space in the newsletter, will give you a more complete report of the doings than I can, but for the nonce here is some smattering of news, as developed at our '33 officers meeting.
"Dollar Sam," treasurer, is most encouraged about '33 finances. He's received dues from about 68 per cent of the class; he's hoping for 85 per cent participation. Remember dues take care of class expenses and are entirely separate from the Alumni Fund and the Campaign for Dartmouth.
Because Mannie Sprague was in California for a previously stated reason, Page gave Mannie's report. They are encouraged! As of April 24, Alumni Fund contributions were up about $19,000 from last year, same time to $69,000 and the number of contributors was up 10, to 154. Mannie is convinced we can meet our dollar objective of $85,000. He would like to see more contributors who would carry the load. Let's get Mannie a Green Derby this year give to the A. F. and boost his morale!
Jeff Davis is hard at work on the 50th reunion. For those who don't make reservations elsewhere, Middle Mass will be '33's dorm. It has the advantage of private baths, which aren't to be sneezed at over age 65. There is a move afoot for "sisters-in-law" to be encouraged to attend. What is a "sister-in-law"? She is the widow of a classmate. Some of us, writer included, hate that five-letter word. We hope we will have friendly motor pools to bring our "sisters-in-law" to our (and their) 50th.
Robert T. Cox is working on a 50th reunion booklet. He will probably send out more inquiring questionnaires to supplement those you have already received from the College. In the meantime, please send back the College's they will be important in Bob's work, too.
Prexy Page was very pleased with the performance of '33 this year and at the officers weekend. A parcel of youngsters, class of 1956, received the Class-of-the-Year award, but 1933 had an "Honorable Mention." Rugen was on a panel show of the class secretaries and was told he didn't utterly disgrace the class.
Saturday night, the aforementioned officers and wives, augmented by Bill and Sue Dewey,Mel and Ruth Katz, "Dumps" and HarrietMacCarty, and Dottie Manchester gathered at the Norwich Inn for dinner. We celebrated the Worthingtons' 22nd wedding anniversary that night. Later on, some coltish cad found their nightwear on a hook in their Inn bathroom and tied it all in tight knots. And so to bed!
There is not much personal news in these notes, but here are a few items to tide you over to the next issue (September):
Heagan Bayles made news in the advertising column of the New York Times. That's old hat, but this time it was because one of his proteges had been elected president of another large agency. Friends of Heagan will be saddened to know that his wife Gladys died this past December they were married in Hanover in September of 1933.
Jack Manchester is at last out of Mary Hitchcock Hospital, recuperating at home. Dottie was able to smile again at the Norwich Inn dinner.
Helen (Jack) Fitzgerald has remarried, to Clay Mellor '36, whom she and Jack had known for over 50 years. Clay's older brother was best man at the Fitzgerald wedding many years ago.
If you are going to the mini-reunion in Hanover, October 9-11, join classmates at the Holiday Inn, White River Junction. Call Joan Cosgrove, 802/295-7537 for reservations. Summer well!
