On July 31, Danny Hull died in Edgartown, Mass., after a long illness. Hank Bagg lost a long battle with cancer on May 7, a fact reported in "Thirty-Nine Out" in the July issue, but we thought it proper to report the death in this column for those who might have missed it.
Congratulations to Harvey Lee "Dusty" Rohde for receiving the distinguished Dartmouth Alumni Award on June 18, the fifth such recipient that the class of 1939 has recorded over the years.
By the time these words are read, our fall mini-reunion will be history. Fortunately we have a nice fat pile of correspondence collected through the summer and even the spring months. We have a letter from John Kelleher, written to Jim Corner, at a time when John was deep into reading exam papers, which he declares is more difficult than writing an exam. John says his news is all good except possibly the fact that three of his four daughters are living in St. Louis and the fourth is considering such a move. He has nothing against St. Louis but the summer heat, but he had thought that when the Kellehers, after 5,000 years or so in Ireland, finally got around to moving to Massachusetts that they would stay say, for a millenium or so but it is not to be. Of such restlessness, he says, he does not approve.
Another letter, written by Colin Holman to Cornie Miller, speaks of a planned motor trip east from his home in Port Ludlow, Wash., to witness the marriage of his son in Syracuse. Then he.suggests that he and Kaye might sneak back to Hanover just to see how things look, and then return to the West Coast via the Gaspe Penninsula and through Canada. Colin retired from his medical practice at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., where he had spent 35 years.
While catching up, we reach way back to late winter and a note from John Evans, who says: "My life, since I retired from the Air Force in 1965, has been circumscribed by involvement in various local and community activities. I have been continuously active in a small country church whose early Sunday service allows, me to 'supply' other nearby churches when they have need. I am nominally a Methodist minister, but my Congregational-Presbyterian background has opened doors to denominations in Barre and Montpelier. I have appreciated this life so very much." John further reports that he has never outgrown his love for Dartmouth, and Mary Ann and he make frequent trips to Hanover.
A brief note from Chuck Spiltoir directed to the ALUMNI MAGAZINE on April 6, from his Trumbull, Conn., home, requests discontinuance of the MAGAZINE until further notice, as he "plans to move out of state." There must be a story behind this cryptic note, Chuck. Drop us a line and give us the word.
Some summer cruising saw Dick and Bunny Brooks on July 30, in their brand new 40foot Dyer cruiser, The Highlight, at the Huntington Yacht Club, where they had the northern Long Island contingent aboard for a mini-mini-reunion. This included Rog and Patti Harrison, Jack and Billee Coulson, Hugh and Trudy MacLaren, and Jack and Lois Kuhlke. Bunny's pickled salmon was much admired and, amazingly, nobody fell overboard.
Farther to the north, Bill and Bunny Webster took their Yankee along the rugged Maine coast and, according to a card dropped from South Freeport, had six fantastic weeks visiting most of the better watering holes along the coast.
Whit Cushing had a solo art show in Rutland, Vt., at the Chaffee Gallery on August 22. Whit laments the passing of Alan Davidson, whose father brought Whit into the world, in the town of St. Albans, Vt. Alan and Whit grew up together, along with 'Alan's beautiful girl, Anne, who became Alan's life-long companion and wife. We went to Kamp Kill Kare and learned to swim, tennis, canoe, and climb mountains together. We went to Dartmouth and even roomed together one year."
About the offspring: Louis T. Merriam III, a junior at Denison University, is serving as a student adviser for the 1981-82 year. The son of Junie Merriam, of course. Eric Edmondson married Jennifer Elizabeth Lively of Greenwich, Conn., and pappa Harry Edmondson made the trip east from La Canada, Calif., to witness the event. Harry took the opportunity to have a long phone conversation with our prexy, Bert MacMannis, and promised to return east for our 45th reunion. Suzanne Lilly '77 married Zenas Hutcheson '75 on February 20. She the daughter of Dave Lilly, of course.
And finally, the class earned a "well-done" letter from the Alumni Fund for setting a new year-out Alumni Fund dollar record. Kudos to Jim Corner, Bill Tomkins, Wes Goding, and Bob Howe and their associates for hitting the fantastic sum of $130,272 with better than 65 per cent participation.
Harvey Lee Rohde '39 was presented with an Alumni Award at the Alumni Council banquet in June. A track star during his undergraduate years, he was cited for his "brisk pace in life": his successful career in advertising and stock-brokerage; his directorships of several major corporations; his community service with the United Fund, Y.M.C.A., and Community Chest of New Canaan, Conn.; and his "active solicitude for the welfare of Dartmouth" as a club president, member of the D.C.A.C., class officer, major donor of the synthetic track surface at Memorial Field, and father of Harvey Jr. '64.
