Hello again, everyone! Not to be outdone by the Brad Evans-sponsored reunion that was discussed in my last column, Carl Du Rei hosted a mini-reunion last June at his house. There was a great showing, and those classmates in attendance were as follows: Dave and Jean Kruger, Al Campbell, Russ Turmail, Chris and Suzanne Palmer, Jay and Hasty Evans, John and Gretchen Schuler, Derick Denby, Len and Peggy Glass, and Jim Hughes. Also conspicuously in attendance were Ben Glass (Len's son) and Tamsyn Evans (Jay's daughter). The highlight of the festivities was Chris Palmer's disrobing and exposing a Dartmouth Indian tshirt. This collector's item was so inspiring that Jay Evans, the original Dartmouth Indian, did a war dance. (Do you all remember the Winter Carnival poster in 1964 with the rabbit-snow bunny? I think Jay designed this poster. How is that for trivia?) Let's all give a rousing whywho-what cheer (formerly Wah-Hoo-Wah) for the above mentioned. Why-who-what is a more appropriate cheer for an institution of higher learning-after all, it symbolizes curiosity and inquisitiveness.
Carl goes on to report that in July he and Amy vacationed with Tom and Mariellen Good at a tennis resort in the Tom's son Jeff will apply to Dartmouth and hopes to be a member of the '87 class.: The Goods live in Hudson, Ohio, where Tom is a partner with Arthur Anderson and Company (Cleveland office).
I received some interesting information recently. Donald Bross runs an organization called the National Association of Counsel for Children in Denver, Colo. The purpose of the N.A.C.C. is to provide training and education for attorneys, guardians ad litem, and others who act as advocates in behalf of children. The N.A.C.C. supports the regulation of legal professionals and others who represent children in court or similar formal proceedings to assure that such representation is of adequate quality; it supports the position of children through amicus curiae briefs and consultation in any matter or activity; and it conducts seminars and distributes publications on children's law. The membership of the N.A.C.C. consists mostly of attorneys and lay persons engaged in various aspects of children's law. If anyone wants to contact Don, he can be reached at 303/321-2963 in Denver.
Joel Deweese sent me a nice note and really boosted my ego when he opened his letter with the greeting, "Dear Puckster." Lately people write me and say, "Dear Huckster." (It was 21 years ago today your secretary was last on skates.) Joel proudly announced his marriage to the former Mary Liebl at the groom's parents' home in Bemidgi, Minn. In attendance were the groom's old Bemidgi High School buddy and four-year North Fayerweather friend JohnWheeler Griffin (of Wheeler Hall descent) and his new bride, Midge. The Griffins had recently returned from their festivities in Florida and were back situated in Colorado. (Thanks, Joel, for the Wah-Hoo-Wah.)
I received an article about Dan Hedges in the Houston Post newspaper. The article praised the job Dan was doing as the current U.S. attorney in Houston. Apparently the U.S. attorney's office in Houston had a friction-filled relationship with local law enforcement agencies. Dan, to quote the article, is responsible for a "strange spirit of growing cooperation...
between federal and local law enforcement agencies." Dan has been a life-long Republican and would like to remain in politics. He was appointed by President Reagan to his present position. The article seemed to imply that Dan was practicing his own form of Reaganomics by streamlining the administration in his office.
Finally, our erstwhile president, Bob Barties, sent me a nice letter. Both the Bartleses (Bob and Carolee) and Bob and Peg Mac Arthur just finished a Parent Effectiveness Training program (P.E.T.). The purpose of the program is to help parents communicate better between themselves and with their kids. (Your secretary is designing his own program, called: "Systematic Program Aimed at Non-obedient Kids": SPANK.)
Incidentally, Bob Mac Arthur heads the Outward Bound land-based operations in the East, and Bob Battles provides the leadership for long-range planning at Kimball Union Academy. Bob (Bartles) mentioned he visited Ric Dupuy, who teaches architecture at the' University of Maryland.
That's it for this month. Oh, I almost forgot. The ALUMNI MAGAZINE can only reproduce black and white photos, so if you send me pictures, do not send colored shots. Bye.
