Up here in the North Country the Big Green hockey team didn't close out the season with quite the titles it has been accustomed to in recent years, but we had season tickets and saw some good games. It will be of interest to the class that freshman Scott Borek won the Roland C. Booma '30 Award as the outstanding rookie, and that he comes from Swampscott. Mass. I know that we and many other couples still use the enameled brick door-stop from the inn, which Rollie and Dot gave each of us some years ago.
There has been a lot of traveling this spring by many, including Eleanor Raymond, Charlie's widow, who went south with her Barrington, R.I., buddy, Marnie Hawkins, widow of George Hawkins '31.
We had an acknowledgement of a birthday greeting from Ed Weinstein, who plans to pass through Hanover in August on his way to view whales off Newfoundland.
Nat Whipple, John's widow, writes, Is 11 noteworthy that at age 70 I have become a grandmother for the first time? I will add thai am off to Tokyo to see and hear and touch little Steve Shinji Whipple, who was born there on November3, 1981." It sure is noteworthy, and deserving of congratulations all around. As I remember it, Nat's son is the only U.S. citizen employed by Japan's largest insurance company.
Bob McClory makes his position clear as he writes: "As a result of a congressional redisricting of Illinois, I determined to withdraw from the Republican primary and will terminate my 20 years in the U.S. House of Representatives at the end of the year. This has been an actionpacked and rewarding period in my life, which I would have to terminate some time, of course. The chances are that Doris and I will remain in Washington, where I'm sure I will be able to make use of my experience as a lawyer — and lawmaker. I simply could not endure an 'inactive' retirement. Also, in leaving the Congress, I should have more time for contacts with classmates."
Apparently there has been unlimited '30 social activity in that state which is always sunny. Bob Chittim classifies the members into "snowbirds"— the Sturmans, the Rauches, the Perkinses, and Marge Chase and her sister — and the "natives" — the Fitzpatricks, Blanchards, Wiggins, Goulds, Shultzes, and Chittims, plus Berta Truex and Louise Blakey Middleton, widow of Wallace Blakey, with her husband Frank Middleton '29. The V anderbecks must also qualify, together with Edythe and Wilson Wright, who is much better, and also Elsie Lilley who, we are sorry to say, is ailing.
The Blanchards are leaving for Hawaii and on their return plan to make the reunion at Ojai. Milt Schultz reports several are now planning to come back earlier next year to Florida. The Chittims and Marge Chase had left, with the former heading for the Cape and Marge going back to Etna and the plenty of snow!
Our southern social secretary also reports that the Wiggins' party was "a smashing success," and that another put on by the Perkinses and Marge Chase and her sister was "a neat time
a stupendous success." Meanwhile, the Fitzpatricks were entertaining the 1930 contingent in the area at several small dinner parties. The close-out of the season appears to have been a party at "Berta Truex's lovely condominium villa in Bradenton." What a life!
Meanwhile, back in Hanover, your class officers will have met at what is termed Class Officers Weekend in early May (my editor in Hanover has picked up the acronym C.0.W.). I report it chiefly to applaud the administration for coming to face reality by assuming far less of the individual's expenses, and even the drinks are Dutch! We'll report on the meeting next issue.
A strong fish, swimming against the stream 0 classmates heading north, Dot Booma went south to Miami in early April to visit her sisters, and then went on to Delray.
Meanwhile, Celie French, Bud's widow, tnat sprite of good will, spent the Christmas holidays with the family of son David '62 in Ratingen, West Germany, where they are now living. After that, she spent a lovely two weeks in St. Croix, where Vivian Cole was among those present Celie feels very lucky to have Wayne'59 and his family living nearby; she will be bac, in Rhode Island for the summer.
