One of the nice things about a New Hampshire town meeting is that anyone attending can, in proper turn, jump up and put in two, or two hundred, cents' worth. We here are fortunate in having this forum in which to express our ideas of what is proper. If you happen to be in the class of' 47, you may find this column is like a town meeting you may have a chance to say something if you ask the right people. Let's hope there are lots of New Hampshire types in our class. I am sure Walt Peterson will find column enough for us all, in turn.
I am fresh from an early May weekend in Hanover, where Dave Orr '57, associate secretary of the College, has for years taken ordinary', medium-organized grads, and turned them into all-seeing, tightly organized, pennypinching reunion planners. I arrived for my 7:45 a.m. breakfast meeting only to have Dave greet me with, "Ham, you're welcome to stay, but your meeting is at 10:00." 1 needed the breakfast, so I had a glimpse of the final weeks of planning by this year's reunion groups. Ah, well, I'm that much ahead for next year.
Our 10:00 a.m. meeting was indeed worth the early breakfast, and I found Warren Daniell '4B and Bud Hughes '49 ready to plan our joint midweek reunion—June 13, 14, 15, and part of 16, 1983.
Being the older and more mature of the classes, '47 had earned the right to some choices, and it looks as though our tent site will be on Tuck Drive. Tuck right now is beautifully green, as is the campus; the pale buds are just popping, and in about a year, we will be there to see them do it again.
This weekend was especially nice. Class President Walt Peterson, with Dorothy, was up for the Friday and Saturday programs. Frank and Urs Weber came on Thursday from Connecticut to Keene, where they overnighted with the Chases. Frank is doing what many retirees do as a front for a golfing addiction. He is a consultant in Houston. He came north to paint his house in Connecticut and got that job done in little over a week. Frank also reports that his daughter Heidi has accepted a job in N.Y.C. with Columbia University and she expects to see Norm Fink, who has accepted a top post as temporary vice president, while performing in the legal/financial role in which he has become so astute.
George and Carolyn Bingham were also in Hanover. George, Frank, and Ham also were seen at the Tri-Kap annual meeting on Webster Avenue.
This was the weekend of the Chariot Races, a throwback to the early seventies. Some big differences from earlier races I'd seen were that they were held at Chase Field instead of on the campus green; the carts seemed to hold together better; many of them finished; and very little food was thrown. There must be a message for the times somewhere there.
There is a saying in upper New Hampshire that we experience some very deep winters nine months of snow and three months of tough sledding. April's blizzard left 22 inches of "spring" over most of this area, but now it is forgotten, and we are into tough sledding.
Here's hoping all of you class brothers are getting the five-year itch to return for reunion. We are planning some good socializing and visiting, some sports, tennis and golf, some music, excellent food in familiar and comfortable surroundings, and, best of all, some classtype experiences for learning and discussion. We hope this will be another opportunity to get to know each other a bit better. Please, we want to hear from you all who have thoughts or ideas.
Reunion Treasurer Dick Hollerith has been in Germany to a manufacturer's exhibit, returning in mid-May. Lansing Reed, on location in Hanover, says he sees light at the end of the tunnel and that his real estate business is forward-looking. I myself have been browsing through my old 30th reunion file, and found these items: John Tower came all the way from Alaska and enjoyed the early morning running; Harley Timbers still has the Dartmouth needlepoint won at auction and enjoys it hanging in his study; Ed Scully, then from California, couldn't go for the weather, but we are promising better this next time; George and Sandy Adelman on Cape Cod will be ready for #35 (for them, the 30th was the first).
Remember those? Go out now and make your plans and reserve June 13—15, 1983. HAM CHASE '47
