The summer of 1983 is history and now it's back to business as usual. First some recent East Coast promotions.
Dick Hopkins has just been appointed vice president of sales for Phillips Corporation, a leading manufacturer and distributor of machine tools and industrial supplies in the Washington, DC, area. Since graduation, Dick has been associated with Warner and Swasey in various marketing and sales positions.
Chuck Hunter is a newly-elected vice president of Delaware Trust and Company of Wilmington. Previously with Brown Brothers, Harriman and Company of New York, and the Rockefeller Family and Associates, Chuck has also served as deputy treasurer for the state of Connecticut. He is a chartered financial analyst.
Peter Thompson has been elected president of David L. Babson and Company, an investment counseling firm located in Boston. Pete joined the organization 17 years ago, after nine years of service with the trust department of the First National Bank of Boston. His father, Rupert Thompson '28, was a former Dartmouth trustee, and his son Christopher will keep the tradition going, having been accepted for the class of '87.
Farther down the coast, in Ormond Beach, FL, Pete Wheeler is back in school studying for his master's at Stetson University. "Sue (my wife of 24 years) and I thought we had put the children out of the nest when we left them up north three years ago, but they seem to be returning."
Bob Edwards, who now calls Auburn, IN, home, ran into some old Dartmouth Med School friends at their Harvard Medical School reunion: Jack Porvaznick, Bob Morse, SvenKister, Bernie Carpenter, Jim Wiggin, and Lew Weintraub. Bob comments that they were "all looking good, happy, and content with the girls that they married long ago."
We all know Bill Wilbur is a key man to keep in touch with as president of Joseph R. Seagram/USA, especially around reunion time. Recently remarried, he and his wife Cheryl live in Manhattan "in the DMZ between the fashionable upper East Side and Harlem." She works for a New York ad agency.
Also amongst the recently married are Colin Hunt and his long-time friend Jane Reynolds, in Wilmington, DE. They are living in nearby Pennsylvania.
As of August 21, Skip Hance is director of development and alumni relations at Harvard Law School. After having worked general contracting for a family-owned firm, he did graduate work at Columbia, receiving his master's in history in 1964. Since then, his career has been in secondary education, including stints in fund raising and as headmaster of Miss Porter's School in Connecticut.
For years, Quigg Porter and Don Hummel have kept the Northern Trust Company of Chicago solvent, and now Hal O'Connell joins them. His experience is not too shoddy, seeing as he has spent the past 25 years at Continental Illinois National Bank.
You swimmers especially will remember that there is an annual athletic award given in memory of our classmate John Glover "to that individual who emulates the academic, athletic, and leadership qualities " of john. This year the award was given to Tim Chapman, class of '84.
The 1983 Alumni Fund was again a tremendous success. Special thanks go to Frank Chase, who once more did a fine job directing the campaign for our class.
Remember that as our 30th reunion is approaching, we should start making plans to return to Hanover. The dates are June 11-14, 1984, which is Monday through Thursday. This will be a gala, three-class reunion, with our friends and their children from the classes of 53 and '54. Hope you already have plans to attend our three-class reunion warm-up the weekend of October 21. See you then.
