We were lucky enough to be in the Sarasota area when the annual 1931 Florida reunion came to pass there on February 15, it being the west coast's turn. Ori Hobbs and DanDenham were largely responsible for it, and a great time was had by all. We started with a cocktail party at the Hobbses' new showplace inland at Bent Tree, had a fine dinner at the Sarasota Yacht Club, and ended with a party after-the-party at the Denhams' on Longboat Key, on the Gulf side.
Those present were Betty and Dan Denham, Dorothy and Dick Henry (from Venice), Marion and John Hase (Marathon), Juneand Ori Hobbs, Liz and Phil Holden (Sanibel), Alice and Dave Loveland (Naples), Rose and Hank McCarthy (Hanover), StanOmasta (St. Petersburg), Lee and Bill Schuldenfrei (Palm Beach), Ruth and Fred Slaughter (Stuart), Blanche and Larry Tucker (Venice), Speedy and Bob Wallace (Delray), BettyWalter, and Edna and Bill Wilson.
When we adjourned to the Denhams', we played a newly-minted game, "Dartmouth Trivia," and had a full-scale debate on whether the Denhams' ceiling fan was rotating clockwise or counterclockwise!
Among those who couldn't make it but sent messages were Art Boardman, Cliff Harris, Donna McElroy, Ernie Moore, and JimPurdy, who was somewhat under the weather. Greetings and regrets were also read from Si Leach, Johnny Benson, Will Matteson,Bob Oelman, Forsha Russell, Cliff McDonald, Sam Taylor, and Bunce Clarkson.
President Ori Hobbs reminded everyone that there will be an executive committee meeting during the Class Officers Weekend, May 5-6.
Let Jim Lyall, from Pleasantville, N.Y., relate the next item: "Dozens of boys, perhaps hundreds, from Camp Pemigewasset in Wentworth, N.H., have enrolled at Dartmouth over the years. Here's a picture, taken in 1922, with Spence Cram standing at the left, yours truly sitting at the upper right, and Morehead Tukey '32 standing at the right. Incidentally, our late Nels Greenlund was a cabinmate of mine another summer. Just off the top of my head, others from Camp 'Pemi' who attended Dartmouth were Carle Blunt '26, for whom the College's Alumni Center is named, and John Tiedtke '30. Alger Hiss was at the camp but'went to another institution for learning."
Bill Walsh checks in from Red Hook, N.Y., with a report that he is still running a "minor league" horse-breeding operation after 30 years. He noted that on January 28 two of the steeds he had bred started at Aqueduct (major league!). One he no longer owns, but the other was a maiden starter and was only nosed out for the win. It may be for sale but we'd like a tip on its next start! Bill and Patsy have been to Costa Rica during the wintry weather. He sends cheers to all.
Coming back to the Sarasota scene again, our Dick Henry, as president, presided over the Febraury 14 luncheon meeting of the Dartmouth Club of Sarasota and a very lively discussion of the issue of the return of NROTC to Dartmouth. Finally, by a unanimous vote of the 55 who were present, he was authorized to send a telegram to the Hanover authorities encouraging the trustees to approve its return. He did so. Incidentally, 1931, with six members present, tied with 1935 for the best attendance.
Well, we're on the back stretch so far as the 1984 Alumni Fund is concerned, and it is to be hoped that your handsome response is al ready in the till. If not, now's the time, so that you can begin enjoying the glow that always follows dropping your card and check in the mail.
