Nationally recognized awards to classmates are something we always take great pleasure in noting. The "John Howland Award and Medal" will be presented to Dr. Henry L. Barnett of New York City by the American Pediatric Society during its annual meeting in San Francisco in May 1984. Henry, medical director of the Children's Aid Society, founded the Department of Pediatrics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University in 1955, and he now serves there as an emeritus professor. The Howland Award, the most prestigious in American academic pediatrics, was established in 1952 "to honor those who, by their contributions to pediatrics, have aided in its advancement."

Word from Line and Tahoe Washburn has it that they are working at Resolute Bay on Cornwallis Island in the Northwest Territory of Canada each year from May to September, studying frozen ground problems and glacial history. They see Bill and Betty Lingley from time to time.

Scotty McPherson writes from Mount Dora, Fla., that he's enjoying retirement in spite of a hectic summer of radiation treatments that have practically eliminated a tumor. He lawn bowls four days a week and golfs occasionally. He and Patricia plan three weeks in Yugoslavia in May!

Jack and June Petrequin have become grandparents for the first time. Their daughter Pamela, Dartmouth '74, and her husband Dan Ringsred '75 have a boy, Patrick, who promises to be a hockey player and rower like his dad! The grandparents can look forward to telling us more about the good news at our 50th!

John and Irene Thomas had their first family reunion since 1976 at Christmas, with one daughter in Terre Haute and another from Philadelphia. Wonderful time, but at 33 degrees below zero in Indiana they were glad to get back to Sun City, Ariz., and a daily nonstop mile swin!

By the time you read this, Jim Boldt expects to be back in Sag Harbor sometime after Easter. His Dartmouth granddaughter is off to an exchange term in San Diego after a firstterm 3.7 grade-point average in Hanover! Jim says, "A genetic paradox."

Nashua residents Howie and Doris Rowe spent a couple of months in St. Augustine, but have returned to their typical condo-living routine, doing chores for "poor working neighbors" and playing a little golf. We're trying to get them used to the short trip to all our activities near Hanover!

Neil Roberts is closing his downtown Denver office where he's been doing consulting and civic activities for the five years since his retirement as CEO of United Banks of Colora do. He and Lee traveled to China in 1982 and to Russia and Eastern Europe in 1983. "We have now produced 19 travel slide-shows with voice narration and music background from most parts of the world."

A card from Rio de Janeiro discloses that Edand Hazel Skillin were on the Rotterdam en route to Cape Town. After a week in South Africa they planned to fly to London and back home to La Jolla.

In the meantime, Lou and Harriet Bookheim were out there at home in La Jolla and were generously hoping we had no worry about snow for Winter Carnival here in New Hampshire.

Bill Hands writes from Phoenix that he's starting his second year with Merrill Lynch Realty, presumably at Old Lyme, Conn! He was in Carefree finishing up recuperating from some kind of "ectomy" I can't read. But not to worry! He's already back to golf, "albeit poor golf so far." He and Alice celebrated their 47th in February!

From Cam Duncan in San Antonio comes a welcome card telling that they plan a trip to Australia and New Zealand in May. "Other wise am keeping busy overseeing our family company's 20,000-head capacity cattle-feeding operation, so EAT BEEF!"

A sharp-eyed and helpful spotter for this column reports to me that The Boston PostGazette annual list of the city's best-dressed women has been issued. Not surprisingly, she says, the name of Phyllis Nayor appears on it! Also, Charlie and Phyllis spent some time visiting daughter Nancy, Wellesley '82, in Beverly Hills, where she is now associate casting director at Universal Studios. "Spoke with Harry Ackerman and had dinner with Rudy and Helen Pacht."

Finally, a couple of more notes from Chicago from Dick Montgomery:Bob Morris is up to his navel in civic activities. Now chairman of the investment committee handling pension funds for state of Illinois employees a $1.6-billion responsibility. He is also a trustee of the Hinsdale sanitary district and still plays tennis three times a week. Earlier this year, he and Ibb took a trip to the Dutch East Indies, Bangkok, Hong Kong, etc.

Owen and Sal Fairweather are just back from a trip to the Himalayas. They spent about six weeks in India, Pakistan, Nepal, etc. At one point, Owen climbed from 7,000 to 10,000 feet and found that climbing at those altitudes is for younger men. About the time the rest of us were preoccupied with the Korean Air Line disaster, they were watching the Russians bomb in Afghanistan from their hotel in Pakistan.
