It seems that the Hovey murals have created a furor amongst faculty, student body, and alumni, out of all proportion to what is basically at issue: namely, are the murals "art"? Let's quote what Count Tolstoy (1828-1910) had to say about "art": "Art is a human activity having for its purpose the transmission to others of the highest and best feelings to which men have risen."
If the Hovey murals don't equate with Tolstoy's thinking, then let them be covered forever; if they do, then let them be exposed for all to enjoy.
The honored "Wah-Hoo-Wah" is not forgotten by 1921 classmates. Alice and LarryNardi used it as an opening salutation to inform me that on September 16, 1984, they celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. Larry writes, "Both of us are in reasonably
good health and still active in local affairs." Keep up the good work, Larry-you always had the energy of a quarterback. Congratulations to both of you.
From Pearl Newcomb, a very loyal member of the class, we learn that she has been elected president of the Minuteman Association of Hanover, N.H., and will be living at White River Junction, Vt., this year. Congratulations, Pearl. Your Dartmouth AlumniMagazine will be there with you.
From Jeff Lawrence to Ray Mallary: Jeff suggests that Don Sawyer has "ambitious ideas." By that he must mean that Don expects to collect a few million in U.S. currency for 1921 retirees. Jeff, where do we apply?
From Don Sawyer, however, we learn that on September 13 he married an old friend and Rockport neighbor of Don and his late wife Alice. Her name is Josephine, but she is called Jo by all her friends. Her husband, Monroe Lorimer, died nine years ago. They plan to winter at Don's Florida home and return to Rockport for the summer. The class sends congratulations to Don and Jo. Enjoy a happy life!
Classmates, when we read the daily papers and invariably find the front page full of horror stories (of all types), don't you feel a sense of helplessness about the drift this great country is taking? Why? Do you have answers? Let's have just one:
The strength of a country or creed lies in the true sense of loyalty it can arouse in the hearts of its people. Louis C. Gerstein, D.D.
