One of the genial, diligent, talented men of 1958 is Dave Sharrock. Dave has been serving as president and general manager of Merrell Dow USA and has recently been given the additional responsibility for the company's activities in Brazil and Latin America. This area is "the most challenging environment for a pharmaceutical enterprise" in the world. Dave joined Richardson Merrell after graduating from Dartmouth in 1958, rising steadily through the executive ranks. He is presently a board member of the National Pharmaceutical Council, is chairman of the National Wholesale Druggist Association/Associate Member Advisory Council, and a member of the Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association and the Proprietary Association. In Cincinnati he is a board member of the 5th/3rd Bancorp and serves on a number of local charity boards. Dave and his wife, Barbara, live in Indian Hill, Ohio, and have two daughters.

In announcing his appointment, the president said, "Walter's experience and forward-looking leadership will strengthen our sales functions around the world." Walt began his career with Colgate in 1963 and has served in such far-flung places as the Philippines, Japan, and France. He holds an M.B.A. from Tuck School. Walt and his wife, Betty, live in Darien, Conn., and have three children. The next time you' are showering with Irish Spring, think of Walt and scrub a little harder.

Hugh Mclsaac was sent to New Zealand about the time Caspar Weinberger became the ugly American in that region. Herb's mission was a peaceful one. As the director of the Conciliation Court of Los Angeles, Calif., he was sent by several foundations to spend a month in New Zealand teaching alternative dispute resolutions to the personnel of their court system. More than 700 people attended seminars held throughout New Zealand. Every civilized society needs to learn how to settle disputes without resorting either to violence or litigation.

Before Paul Paganucci '53 left the College for W. R. Grace, he was able to announce that Dartmouth's endowment now stands in the top 20 in the U.S. and on a per student basis has risen to eighth in the country.

Joe Carter has been appointed vice president of human resources for the BOC Group, Inc. This company has headquarters in London, England, and Montvale, N.Y., and deals in a variety of products and services. Joe will be responsible for the company's personnel, management development, labor relations, compensation and benefits, safety, and industrial health. His previous tours of duty should have well suited him for this new position. He was vice president of human relations with Western Electric and earlier served as vice president of employee relations at a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson. Joe holds a M.B.A. from Cornell University and lives in Bernardsville, N.J.

Ted and Marianne Harris have enjoyed an interesting year. When didn't they? Ted is the president of American Rheumatism Association as well as the dean of the Rutgers Medical School. Marianne has gone into business as an antique dealer and is working to establish their new home in New Jersey. Their oldest son is now a teacher and soccer coach at St. Stephens School in Austin, Tex. Another son is a senior at Brown, and the youngest is a freshman at Yale University. Reluctant to surrender their New England roots, the Harrises still maintain a second home in Norwich, Vt., which they see all too rarely.

Banker Fred Pitzner advises that those who wish to catch up with him or hope to intercept him in his travels should contact him at Box 46, New York, NY 10274.

Peter Hawes has a daughter who is spending her winter quarter at Dartmouth in an exchange program with the University of California at San Diego. Pete resides at Carmel Valley, Calif.

During the many years that RalphManuel served Dartmouth College, no one made a greater effort to foster class spirit and keep old friendships alive. He was a popular and energetic dean, and he continues to be a credit to the College at Culver. It is particularly appropriate that this class should support the commission of the portrait of Ralph Manuel to hang in the Baker Library with those of his illustrious predecessors. If you have not already done so, I urge you to make a significant contribution to this project which honors a distinguished classmate.

It is not an accident that Dartmouth College is a premier institution. Issues arise and people come and go, but the institution remains sound. In a recent issue of U.S. News and World Report, a nationwide poll of college presidents rates Dartmouth College in the top 10 "major research universities and leading grantors of doctoral degrees." It is not a secret who keeps Dartmouth on the top. It is you and I and all of the alumni, teachers, administrators, students, and friends who make Dartmouth what it is today and will be in the future.
