Sorry, but beginning this month copy for the members of the "Old Guard" is limited to only 250 words.
It is with sadness that we note that Dick Udall passed away on August 3, after a period of poor health. An obituary of Dick will be in this or a subsequent issue.
We are able to report that Dick's replacement as class treasurer is Leon (Bud) Freeman. He is also treasurer of the class reunion in June 1988 under the leadership of Charlie Zimmerman.
Reunion is beginning to look like a grand old time and many of the class have indicated that they will be back with their wives, children, and grandchildren. Is there any chance of our seeing some great-grandchildren?
Twenty-three up! Coming down from Maine Bee and I had a very pleasant overnight with Howie Bartlett in his lovely home overlooking the bays of South Harpswell. Howie is very well even after the misfortune of losing his wife, Helen, last April.
Msgr. Carlos Sanchez will again be with Pete Jones for the Memorial at Aquinas House.
Barbara Bixby has again been in trouble with a refracture of her hip and although not well is recovering at home.
Conflicting reports come in about Clarence Goss, the latest from Clarence himself that he had a shot of cortisone in the knee and is doing well.
We are sorry to note that Connie Dodge has had to give up the monumental work she did for the class and glad to announce that a capable replacement has been found in Bunny Metzell.
And now a bit of memory as recorded in a recent booklet by Edward Lathem concerning a few deeds by Ernest Martin Hopkins. It seems that during prohibition there was a rum runner by the name of Joseph Pilver across the bridge, in Vermont who asked Hoppy for a bit of advice because the revenuers were after him and he did not want the College also to be after him. Hoppy is said to have thought for a while and then said he would not join the prosecution, knowing that Joe Pilver was the only honest bootlegger around who sold good liquor and also knowing that some students would purchase bathtub gin. They might as well have good liquor and not the bad stuff. Hoppy was a great man.
Don't forget the 65th in June. It's later than you think.
