Almost immediately after the announcement of James O. Freedman's appointment as president of the College, I was waited upon by a partner in the law firm where I have spent the last 60 years, with effusive congratulations on the appointment. This came from a Brown graduate to whom Dartmouth had been somewhat of a dirty word and who is not known for his compliments in any field. It also came from a Yale Law School classmate and friend of Jim's. Praise from such a source is praise indeed.
No news from the never-writes and all the writers seem to have been well covered in Robin's recent newsletter. This leaves room for a true reminiscence.
I was eavesdropping on two classmates at our 15th reunion. After reaching the conclusion that they didn't really remember each other, they began discussing mutual friends, and a drink or two later, decided they had really been best buddies while in College. As they were parting Joe said to Bill, "You probably didn't remember me at first because I only stayed two years." and Bill said to Joe, "My gracious (or some such expletive) we never did know each other. I was a transfer and came in as a junior."
