This column is being written in July for the October issue. You'll notice a change in style: I must be brief because as of now, this Dartmouth Alumni Magazine has set new lower limits to the columns. Classes '34 through '59 are allotted 500 words, or a cut of nearly half. If you like that change, you may wish to congratulate the editor—he's Jay Heinrichs at 320 Crosby/Blunt Alumni Center, a friendly thoughtful guy who is trying to make the magazine better, thinner, and less costly. There—I've squandered 25 percent of my column, but I'd like to have our readers' understanding.
I'll call this column "What I learned about classmates at our 40th."
Thumbnail profiles: Dick Hollerith: a backhanded compliment, for doing such a superb job of making money matters seem pleasant. Actually, I thought Dick wouldn't be able to function without Romy, who had to work—she's an IBM executive. But Dick drew on his reserve powers to come through in fine style. We're in the black, a successful event. We'll still need Romy, next time.
Bill and Jean Hallager: after less than two years in Lincoln, N.H., Jean is promoting a new historical museum building. Bill is assisting with new ideas in attracting good help to Loon Mt., plus attracting skiers, and both are leading the effort to found, and to fund, the North Country Cultural Center in Lincoln, an exciting new venture now launching.
Bruce Bryer: career Navy, retired as Lt. Commander. Received master of library studies degree, is now a librarian. You may have noticed his knapsack at the reunion. He found time to visit 11 libraries in the Hanover area, most of them on or near campus, and felt well-rewarded for the effort. (Accountant's question: this makes it a business trip?) Bruce is getting a lot out of life, and enjoys library-ing much more than sea-going.
Dave Ehrlich: has worked up the ladder in sizable firms in California, as an engineer. Retired, to be with and enjoy his wife Constance in her last months of sickness, last year. He has good memories, and three children, and misses her. He came East to reunion, and seemed to be enjoying us as we did him. It looks like 1991 is our next date.
Bear and Judi Davis: another California!!, does consulting engineering on his own schedule, otherwise he does as Judi says, as any newlyweds would. Judi makes the Bear appear a lot younger, as he probably is by now.
Bob and Nancy Motlong: coming from Denver where they tried a family business P.O.P. (Peoples Opinion Poll), and now retired from that. Bob showed Nancy around Dartmouth, all the places he used to frequent; the Bema, D.D.A., gym and field house, plus places he'd never been, such as classrooms, library, etc. I'm sure she'll like Dartmouth when she realizes what gentlemen we all are.
Tom Harrington: in trim shape for a connoisseur of foods. He has bags ready, travels light, prefers the South, has a family in New England, and can talk well on many subjects.
That's 500 words; we'll continue in November.
