My cup runneth over with news—a new first! I may even get to the end of this column without as much as a breath on the beloved Modesto. Actually that's even more likely than ever since effective with this issue the Alumni Magazine is allocating somewhat less space than in the past to the great class of 1970. That being the case, we'll start with a note concerning the Alumni Fund, since we know the editor would never dream of cutting anything on that subject!
Seriously, we should all be proud of our tremendous achievement with the Alumni Fund campaign ended in June. Our class broke all sorts of records, such as raising 160 percent of our objective (or $115,389), the most ever raised by a class out 17 years, etc., etc. I'm personally most impressed that a whopping 78.3 percent of our classmates contributed, compared to about 65 percent of alumni for all classes.
It was difficult for a young man to be sure of direction during the turbulent years we were at Dartmouth, and perhaps on that account we've occasionally heard it suggested that our class lacked the cohesiveness of other classes. I would submit that those difficulties and differences were our strength and that our increasing support of the College over the years represents a growing appreciation of that fact. Congratulations to Robert "Jack" Pansegrau, our head agent, and thanks to all who gave, or wanted to give but couldn't this year (I've been there).
Speaking of fund raising, those of you in New England may have seen Dennis Jolicoeur pitching for the Easter Seal Foundation on its New Hampshire telethon last spring. Dennis also serves on the Easter Seal's New Hampshire and Vermont board and as the corporate gifts chairman. His family's long involvement with Easter Seals includes the Jolicoeur School for the disabled in Manchester, N.H. Dennis busies himself otherwise as publisher of BusinessNew Hampshire magazine.
Contacts in Middletown Springs, Vt. ( a town with which I have ancestral associations), forwarded a letter found in a local throw-away from Richard Kenney's father about Rich's MacArthur Fellowship, reported at greater length nearby. Congratulations, Rich.
Any of you who read beyond Vermont's regional press to other newspapers may have found in the Wall Street Journal of April 1 the announcement of Bill Shattuck's appointment as a general partner for research at Montgomery Securities. No other details were provided, but it's nice to see one of our own in the fine print of the Journal.
Speaking of publications of note, TheDartmouth Review recently profiled John"Jock" McKernan. The article was unique in that I doubt it would have offended anyone. Not too surprisingly, John supports working within the system, and the far right hardly holds the patent on that political philosophy. As if to prove my earlier comment regarding the turbulence of our years at Dartmouth, John reports that the 1969 confrontation at Parkhurst Hall was the single event which most inspired him to look for better ways to accomplish things in society. There could hardly be a better example of growth through adversity.
Thanks again to everyone for making the Alumni Fund campaign such a success. Now let's hope you are rewarded with an exciting season of Dartmouth football. Who could ask for more?
