Just like the squirrels in my front yard, I have been collecting and hoarding for the winter. Not nuts, but news from classmates; which usually means that the summer haze has worn off and years of tradition (returning to school in the fall) have stirred the green blood cells which lie dormant in June through August. The first bit of news comes from the past class secretary, DaveDunbar, who moved to New York City from Montreal with his wife, Barbara. Since May of 1986, Dave has been working for a condensed non-fiction book club called The Select Reader, handling acquisitions, editing, and various other duties. He continues to keep his hand in the Dartmouth network visiting with Bob Sullivan, Art Beaver, and John (Duke) Hart.
Jake Dann, who kindly allowed me to wear his lacrosse gear one night so I could be thrashed in Leverone, has surfaced in Arizona. Jake and Donna moved there from St. Louis so that he could do some field work for his dissertation. He says that son Jess, who should now be about two years old, specializes in naming things, so he should be particularly helpful. The Danns have recently seen Scott Herriott who is godfather to their son. Jake also had the pleasure of seeing John Hagelin during his debut as a vocalist.
In a couple of short notes, word comes that David Graham has been appointed assistant professor of English at Ripon College in Ripon, Wis. David has had several of his own works published and will be teaching creative writing and literature courses. Clearly David benefited more than a little bit from English 5. Howard Hodel also writes that, "After nine years on the move in the oil business—Chicago, San Francisco, Houston, Anchorage, and Houston (again!)—l've decided to move to Chicago and be a banker for a while." Howard is with Contintenal Bank, I believe.
Will Hendren describes himself as still in training, but my guess is that's merely a humble expression for perfecting skills which nobody else has acquired. He is at Emory University doing cardiothroacic surgery. I suppose endless training is a good thing after all. Will "officiated" at JohnSteven's wedding to Heather Thomas. Rumor has it that the newlyweds are living in Ithaca where John is practicing law.
I received, by way of Cate Marlette Waddell, a nice note from Steve Harper, who is settled (and married) in Santa Barbara. His invitation to come out and go for a sail is terribly inviting. Although it will be difficult for me to make that appearance, I know he would entertain any visitors just as an excuse to hop in that boat. Get ready for unsolicited house guests, Steve.
In a final note, Bob Jackson actually wrote a full-page letter describing his activities of the last 12 years, which recently culminated in a visit to the College and with Jeff Sassorossi, our man in Hanover. Bob was particulary disgusted "to learn that Tony's Pizza had been replaced with a yuppie lunch place complete with spider plants hanging in in the windows." I agree, I don't think all-night beer pong would have had the same allure after free-range chicken on a croissant. Bob is living in Pittsburgh and is now vice president and general manager of a major division of Joy Manufacturing. The Jackson family is expanding rapidly with three sons and a fourth (variety unknown) on the way. One final comment from Bob to Marty Jenner, who "has left his cushy academic administrator position, and sold out to big business (3M Company). Welcome to the real world, Marty!"
