A good letter from Hal Rider, whom the College lists as class of '25 because he was out sick a year and graduated a year late. He says that "My heart has always been with 1924." Hal and Everett Robie '23 founded the Dartmouth Club of Western Connecticut in 1935. He sent me a menu of the dinner meeting at the Roger Smith Hotel in Stamford on June 15, 1936. Four courses including roast beef for $l.OO.
Betty Miller, Ruff's widow, reports that her daughter Barbara Sabin recently returned to Hanover from two years of teaching in Bangkok. Barbara reports on an active Dartmouth Alumni Club in Bangkok busily interviewing candidates from Bangkok International School. That's news from even further away than Western Connecticut.
Grace Cross, Stan's widow, reports four grandchildren in college, one already graduated, and one more to go. She would love to go to Hanover but finds the drive too long.
Wes Blake reports going west. He and Bassy went to the wedding of their second grandson in Syracuse. They drove from White River Junction up to Burlington and then flew the rest of the way over lake country that they found lovely.
Arnold George reports retiring from practice of medicine as of April 1, 1986. He visits his wife, Grace, every day in the nursing home where she has been for over seven years. He also keeps busy attending medical meetings, lectures, walking, doing genealogical research, reading, keeping track of sports, and visiting his children. He even goes to church quite often.
The most recent word from the DanaBents is that they are planning to movefrom the Cape. No report on their
destiGreg Belcher makes it to Calais, Vt., in the summer and returns to Dunedin, Fla., for the winter. Finds "it's harder to walk, work or read, but still feels lucky to be here."
Stu Eldredge bewails the fact that Marion and he feel crippled by their inability to drive anymore. He then goes on to the catalog of achievements of their seven grandchildren, everything from sculpture, violin, agriculture, painting, and riding. His son, Bill, with his doctorate from Yale in botany, is in Florence trying to find out a way to feed Africa.
Bob Hall reports a slow recovery from an emergency operation last April for an itinerant gallstone that ended up in a near fatal location. A close call but at last report he was beginning to get his strength back.
Katherine Pope, widow of Rollie Bates, reports that their son George S. Bates '55 was elected Episcopal bishop of Utah. He was installed on October 25, 1986.
