The results are in, and we have a winner! You will recall that in the December column I asked for entrants in our transl ate-a-paragraph-of-Filipino-dialect contest. Entrants were asked to attempt the translation of a letter that JB and KatieStearns Friday sent to Philippa Guthrie, written in Filipino dialect. Thanks to all of you (in many different classes, ranging from '72 to '83) who either attempted to translate or did successfully translate the paragraph. The winner an '82. ChrisWeiss, who works for a division of General Electric in San Francisco, sent in the first correctly translated entry (translated for him by a woman in his office, Elsa Atendido). No need for censorship of the letter (as we once had wondered); the paragraph was written in the Ilokand dialect and said, "Thank you for the writeup in the Alumni Magazine. I'm happy that you can speak Ilokand. We needed eight months to learn this dialect. But the correct way to 'write our place' is Luzon, not Luzoa. Look at the map. 'Til then, JB and Katie. P.S. Come visit us sometime!" Congrats and thanks Chris it's such a thrill to see your name in print, right?
I received a letter from J.J. Hanley-Mlynarski, reporting that her new, hyphenated addition is the result of her marriage to Henry D. Mlynarski Jr., '73, Georgetown University, on October 18, 1986. A slew of '82s attended this Big Event: JodyPalermo was a bridesmaid, and other guests included Sharon Flynn, SusanBurkhardt, John Kaplan, John Colon, CJJoung, Robin Riley and Megan Singer. The wedding took place in York, Maine, and it certainly sounds like a good time was had by all! JJ and her new hubby are living in London, England.
Wedding bells also rang for KellyDixon, who married William Mulford Cooper November 29 at Columbia University's Harrison Homestead in Arden, N.Y., (as reported to us via the New YorkTimes.) The Times also reported Beth Haffenreffer's marriage to Oliver Coleman Scholle Jr. in Chestnut Hill, Mass. And, Eric Miller wrote that he married Wendy Folberth '84 on August 2, 1986. The '82 contingent of Kappa Sig arrived en masse, including John Strawn, Mike Donoghue,John Donahoe, Steve Stone, GeorgeThompson, Ben Tongue, Rob Olsson,John Funk, Andy Sanford, Rob Carroll, and Brett Homovec.
Also in August, Eric Christensen and Sue Elliott were married. The wedding party was an 'B2 special: Rick Bercuvitz,Chip Hankins, and Greg Jones were some of the groomsmen, and the bridemaids included Amanda McColpin,Jeanie Witte, Carol Davis, and Beth Haffenraffer. Rick Bercuvitz (who is getting his M.A. In history at UVM) sent news of this '82 wedding along with news of another: Andy Shapiro and Betsy Henry were also married last year. Attending their wedding were Randy Gordon, EricRichardson, Brian Tompkins, KarinRothwell, Nancy Kricorian, and BeckyRothfusz.
1987 will be another year resounding in bells of the wedding-kind. Gray Reisfield will be married to Rich Horan '76 in April, Jim Glennon is planning a May wedding to Julia Walsh 'B4, and MaryThomson will be a September bride. She is marrying Peter Renner '78.
Thanks to all of you who have written to me recently it's great to hear from you. Glenn Grube wrote to tell that he had graduated from Penn's Grad School of Fine Arts last May with a master's of architecture degree (and the Coornvelt Medal for excellence in structures courses). On the side and in his free time, Glenn played in the Penn Jazz Ensemble. He spent last summer painting houses and Grand Touring Europe for 13 weeks. By the time this is in print, he should be firmly established in his new job.
Jason Klein sends news that after graduating from Harvard Business School last June he also spent the summer Grand Touring Europe, and he is now in New York working as an associate for McKinsey and Company.
News was also recieved from JohnGaudioso, who is working for IBM in Stamford, Conn. John mentioned that Kwabena Gyasi-Twum is also working in Stamford for American Tobacco's treasury department. Paula Dugan wrote of her busy schedule, which includes working at Shepley, Bulfinch, Richardson, and Abbott Architects in downtown Boston, and also teaching at a design studio at the Boston Architectural Center a professional architectural school on Newbury Street. She wrote that Gina Kunz is back in school, getting her M.B.A. at Northwestern and that Sheila Kay Cooper is at UCLA studying for her M.B.A.
