I am sure you all join with me in,wishing our new president success as he undertakes the great responsibility of guiding Dartmouth on its continuing path to greatness. Steve Mullins, who represented the Alumni Council on the committee that chose the new president told Dick Barker that President James Freedman was an absolutely outstanding candidate who stood heads and shoulders above a field of approximately 600 other candidates. He has some big shoes to fill when it comes to caring about Dartmouth and the Dartmouth family. One will have to go a long way to surpass Dave McLaughlin's concern for our alma mater.
Moving on from the Presidential Selection Committee, Steve Mullins is now chairing the Alumni Council Ad Hoc Committee on the Alma Mater. If you have any thoughts on the appropriateness of changing "Men of Dartmouth," be sure to convey them to Steve. I am sure he will be happy to hear from you.
Jon Moore may have left the official family at Harvard University for his new position at U.S. Ambassador at Large for Refugee Policy, but he never seems to be far from Cambridge, where in April John spoke on refugee policy at Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government.
Tom Sayles, Chairman of the Summit Bancorporation, in Summit, N.J., was honored as Humanitarian of the Year by the Hemophilia Association of New Jersey. Tom was presented with a Steuben Eagle Award for his service to hemophilia victims. About .375 area business executives and their spouses attended the event, raising $55,000 for research and treatment of hemophilia. Congratulations, Tom, both for the recognition received and for the good works you have been involved in.
Dick Barker has announced the newly restructured Class Awards Committee. The new committee will be chaired by Dick Steinberg and will include Bob Berry, John Gillespie, and Tom Kong. If you have any suggestions or nominations for future awards, please contact any member of the committee.
The Barker family received good news in April when the last of the Barker siblings, son John, became the first of the Barker siblings to head for a college career in Hanover. As a member of the class of 1991, John becomes a third generation Barker at Dartmouth following in the footsteps of President Dick, and Dick's father, Dale, class of '15.
Bob Levine, as chairman of the Tuck Annual Giving, led this year's fund drive to a successful conclusion. For the first time in its history, Tuck Alumni contributed over $1 million to this annual drive. Bob actively led the drive, not hesitating to personally chase his own classmates to help bolster the record-setting participation in a graduate school of business alumni fund drive. While Bob was busy raising money for Tuck, Barbara was busy spending money on the Levine's new dream house. It seems like a fair division of labor to me.
John and Betty Heston left the bucolic Hanover surrounds for the more continental flavor of Europe in early May. I understand John addressed some of our far-flung alumni clubs while soaking up the European culture.
Bill Pitney has moved from New York State to Durham, N.C. Bill's new address is 501 Lazywood Lane, Durham, NC 271129719. How about letting us know what you are doing in Durham, Bill.
Bill Madden writes "Last year's health setbacks have resulted in the family retiring to Florida with me. After some time to heal, I expect to resume a law or related position in Florida. Bill's new address is 3316 S.E. 19th Avenue, Cape Coral, FL 33904.
Herb Hillman's April class newsletter must have set a record for news coverage with ten pages of pictures and information. I would settle for perhaps ten items of news. How about letting me hear from you soon. Have a great summer.
