As we left our hero at the end of the last episode, slouched sourly before his Macintosh, green eye shade pulled low over bloodshot eyes, he silently vowed that his next effort would result in something of some significance to someone! Now, with Thanksgiving nearing, with a blessed chill in the air after the stifling summer, his spirits have somewhat revived, though he can find no tangible reason for the change.

Two calls, perhaps, have helped restore the lilt to his voice and the spring to his step. Both calls, one from Bill Beard, the other from Don Alexander, were inquiries about the Davidson game in early October. Our scribe was able to assure both that victory lay ahead and that they should be on hand for the festive occasion and victory celebration. An occasional infusion of Green into my neighbors to the north certainly can do them no harm and may, in fact, have a salubrious effect on our Tar Heel brethren.

Your scribe is also pleased to report that first son, Jeff '84, is now happily married to the former Hilary Gerlin, and that the newlyweds, after a trip to Nantucket, have sett led in West Roxbury, Mass. Assisting in the knot-tying were best man and second son Chris '86, and bridesmaid Kate '90 Other groomsmen included two of Jeffs former roommates, Brian Riffle '85 and Jay Meyer '85.

Son Chris was mentioned in an earlier column, along with his roommate, Ted Eliopoulos '86. From the DAM editors and your scribe, apologies to Ted and all his Hellenic progenitors for that column's miserable mangling of his name. As for Chris, his job in D.C. this summer gave pause to his schoolteacher father who, after 26 years in the profession, makes less than his son did as an intern in a law firm after two years of law school. Perhaps he can support the old man in his dotage.

Having assumed his current eminence, your scribe was pleased that he could relinquish his duties as the state's district enrollment director to classmate MurrayKaplan, who has been doing an excellent job seeking out talented candidates for the Big Green. As is no doubt the case elsewhere, despite the rising costs of an Ivy League (or any other) education, the competition down here is fierce. It's a pleasure to report that Murray is right in there.

One of the problems faced by Murray, and by all loyal alums, is the incessant Dartmouth-bashing currently being indulged in by the national press. We have been taken to task by newsmagazines, and, not surprisingly, excoriated by the Wall Street Whatsis and Pravda on the Potomac. On August 12 the local evening rag carried syndicated columnist Jim Kilpatrick's contribution, "Days of Shame at Old Dartmouth," which recapped the Review/Cole affair and ended with an attack on "Dartmouth's gutless president, James O. Freedman." I would be most interested to hear how my classmates react to what has been happening on the Hanover Plain and how it is generally being perceived by the national press.
