News of four professional appointments crossed my desk this month, once again reminding me of the diverse careers we have chosen. Jamie B. Stewart Jr. has been named executive vice president of the Corporate Finance Group of Mellon Bank Corporation. His new position not only entails broadening Melon's investment banking and corporate finance capabilities, but also some interesting travel. Jamie will have responsibility for Mellon's operations in Hong Kong, Tokyo, London, Australia, and Canada. That's what I call a broad span of control.
On the medical front, Harry Jaffe has been appointed assistant chief of the Division of Internal Medicine at Evanston Hospital. While keeping up his private practice, Harry has major responsibilities for the Northwestern teaching program for students, interns and resident.
In the halls of justice, Ed Mallett continues his work as a defense attorney. Ed has also assumed the presidency of the Texas Criminal Defense Lawyers Association. From the looks of their journal, Ed has set a major agenda for his term of office. Challenging the membership to meet its commitment to ensure individual rights, Ed has also confronted the criticism that the legal leadership has been "inbred and selfperpetuating ... mostly Anglo males working in jails and courthouses peopled by black and Latino defendants . . .'clubby.' " Ed has declared all leadership positions open and encouraged appointments based on hard work and enthusiasm for his organization. Ed's was a rousing message from a new president and exhibited real leadership.
After years of legal service as both assistant attorney general of New York and as an environmental lawyer, Bob Glennon has been named executive director of the Adirondack Park Agency. Bob has written extensively on the legal history of the Adirondack Forest Preserve and was honored recently for his work by the environmental law section of the State Bar Association. In his new position Bob is responsible for everything from formulating state policy for the park to feeding a staff of 53 people. Given the controversy over condominium development and economic development plans in the area, Bob has a big job ahead of him.
Let me hear of your news.
