Dear Class: Hello and greetings from Larry and Genie Cate, Lee and Dick Bowman, Bob and Betty Bunker, Creight and Jean Holden, Bob and Crosbie MacMillen, Bob and Mary Armstrong, Hal McAllister, and Bob and Vicky Clark ... all of whom showed up in Charlotte, N.C., on Sept. 30 along with 300-plus other alums for the festivities surrounding the Davidson game and the game itself. It was a quite a weekend receptions, tours, dinners, lectures, outdoor lunches, Southern Buffet, a sound-and-light show by the folk group Maggie's Fancy, and a WIN for the Dartmouth footballers. Great!
Creight flew in from the West Coast where he had been fanning the flames for his new business," the Encore Travel Card. It's growing and going well, he says, and we are not surprised. Who could imagine Creight without a business? The Cates, as noted in an earlier column, were fresh from their trip around the U.K. Bob and Mary Armstrong, who live in Charlotte, were on hand and getting up-to-date. Bob and Vicky Clark were taking advantage of the trip to visit with their son and daughter-in-law—also Charlotte residents. Lee and I were ditto, checking up on son Bruce and his new house in Charlotte. Bob Bunker brought a 45-minute tape of the best of his undergraduate movies, featuring a bunch of very young-looking people in the years of '37, '39, and '4O. We hope to hear from any of you who have undergraduate or early reunion movies and would be willing to make tapes of same for use at the 50th! More on this via the Indian Drum.
Jack and Donna Faunce wrote in, early in September. They had been to a booksellers' convention in California, then went on for two weeks in Maui with their son. A great trip with some time in S.F. on the way back. Jack has a bit of a back problem which prevents extended standing, stair climbing, and the like. He finds it helpful to use a wheelchair occasionally. It is certainly the best way to attend a cocktail party!
We are saddened to report that Lee Bassett's wife, Martie, passed away on September 21 after a long battle with cancer. Classmates attending the services were Dick and Zelda Goulder, Herb and MilFoster, Bill and Jane Huffman, Karl andGinny Bruch, and Scotty and LoomieRogers. Our belated sympathy to Lee.
News from the College: The Washington Post reported on the "Boffo Buffet," a $150-per-person fund-raiser for the new Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center ... 27 chefs, 650 guests, candlelight in Thayer!
John Kemeny is teaching his last class and will retire at the end of this term.
Dick Bowman is hiring an alien from the planet Krypton. Said alien has magic powers and can induce people to write letters. Have a Merry and a Happy and welcome to '89.
