Fortune noted recently that Alan Smith should not be counted out of the race to succeed the other Smith as CEO of GM now that Alan . has dropped the initial "F" (Farguar) from his name.
Union Trust Company has promoted Yates Eckert to the position of executive vice president to manage the trust division of its New Haven executive office and three other regional trust offices in Connecticut. Yates had been a senior vice president in the trust department since 1982.
Our junkets so far this fall to Hanover have turned up two losses (Princeton and Yale both squeakers) and a respectable collection of '52 classmates. Sat with the Grocotts and McDonalds on the shady side for Princeton. We missed the Friday night Yale festivities, but found many '52s at John and Judy North's farm in Lyme between the game on the sunny side and class dinner at Alumni Hall Saturday night. Some of us witnessed a sheep stampede at the farm just before heading back to the campus for dinner. Seems that the flock broke and trampled the electronic wire fence in a fit of hunger. John North and Norm Logan's assistance lured the critters back into their enclosure so we could all head to Alumni Hall where we encountered Alden and Ruth Guild, Steve and AnnMandel, Jim and Sally Toffey, Dwightand Jackie Ketcham, Bill and Judy Breed,Dick and Caroline McDonough, Frankand Drewry Logan, John and KayMcCrillis, Angus and Liz Russell, Jimand Ann Weidman, Bill and MaggieMontgomery, Dekkers and Louise Davidson, Bob and Lois Holmes, and GailSanderson. Seen earlier in the day were John and Judy Grocott and Gene and JudyCesari. Charlie and Nancy Clough slid between the '52 and '53-post game festivities. Norm and Dusty Logan's daughter Debby '84 popped in from her studies as a first-year Tuck student.
Overheard some retirement vibes from Alden Guild, if that's what becoming "of counsel" at National Life in Vermont means. Steve Mandel has sold his domestic business recently, but still has things going on in London. Wife Ann, the "mayor" of Darien, is winding up her last term and wondering what toe next political move might be. Cooling it with Steve is a possi- bility. Jim and Sally Toffey shuttle between Stuart, Fla., and Kennebunk, Maine, and it sounds like Jim has lots of post-retirement interests to prompt stops in between. The Weidmans (western New York State) and Ketchams (Philadelphia) came the farthest distances. Highlight of Saturday evening was the presentation of the John H. Davis Trophy to our class for achieving the high- est ($219,000) total of Alumni Fund gifts in a non-reunion giving year. Bill Breed and Dick McDonough took the big bows followed by a few lines of Happy Birthday, the cake, etc., in honor of Bill's "Big 60."
Back at New London Sunday morning I spotted Chuck Curtis, Bob Holmes, and John Grocott teeing off in the drizzle at Lake Sunapee C.C. Trusting none of the three low handicappers, Whit Williams '50 and I withdrew from the first tee to other Sunday chores. It was great to see Mike Harris '51 during both football weekends.
