Two things of note occurred on November 19, 1988: Dartmouth beat Princeton; and your class executive committee met at Allen Stowe's house in Princeton. Over coffee and donuts, we dealt with the mundane housekeeping chores of running the class. Dues will be raised to $30 next year. Our goal for the Alumni Fund is $196,000, not much more than we gave last year. Rick Roesch has agreed to be our 30th Reunion chairman. Marty Lower received the James B. Reynolds Award from the College as the "Outstanding Head Agent 26-40 years out." Jay Emery has a lot of VHS tapes of our 50th birthday party. Wives of non-attendees: this is the ideal gift for his 51st birthday! Thad Seymour's moving speech is included and that alone makes
the tape worth $20. Write to Jay: Blunt Alumni Center, Hanover, NH 03755. In December 1986 I reported the executive committee's concern over the polarity that was occurring within the College's various constituencies. Our conclusion was that the root issue was the College's system of governance. After two years of unsuccessful attempts to voice our concerns through the Class Presidents Association and the Alumni Council, where they were ignored or even hooted down, we have decided to communicate directly with President Freedman. It seems to us that the structure of the College's myriad of representational bodies is self-perpetuating and therefore, not responsive to the mainstream of alumni opinion. Consequently, many alumni in our class and others are feeling both disenchanted and disenfranchised. Clearly, even within the executive committee, there is no unanimity regarding the various controversial issues and events that seem to swirl around Hanover. However, we are unanimous in the opinion that our thoughts as alumni are universally disregarded. And that, gentlemen, is a serious problem. Consequently, we are preparing a sharper focus on the issue of governance at the College which we intend to discuss personally with President Freedman. It seems apparent that the seat of power currently lies with the administration. If our class is representative of alumni opinion, there is a chorus of voices crying in the wilderness. Seth Zimmerman reported that he and Bruce Hasenkamp, together with their families, were among the 3,000 who attended David Schofield's ordination as Bishop of the Diocese of San Joaquin in the Episcopal Church. David's ordination was previously reported by Jim Adler. However, Jim did not report the pithy part passed on by Seth. "David, singing off-key as always, filled the hall with a tremendous sense of joy, and will no doubt contribute the same kind of inspiration to the national house of bishops." No doubt the joy came from David's inspirational leadership, not his rendition of "Eleazar Wheelock."
And, too, a brief note of congratulations to Al Roberts, who recently resigned his position as New York City commuter. He still works for Arthur Young, but, as of late September when he finally came to his senses, he is managing partner of their Stamford, Conn., office. A lot closer to home.
