Around the middle of February the. compassionate Florida sunshine and warmth, interspersed with an occasional touch of chill and bluster (just to show that Mother Nature is still the boss), gave way to a really refreshing breeze from Hanover in the form of a new newsletter entitled "Dartmouth Currents." In a timely effort to combat the ill effects from the national press—which savagely delighted itself in publicizing controversy while ignoring the mainstream of Dartmouth life, the learning programs, student and faculty interaction, ana undergraduate projects —the new publication is designed to keep the alumni informed on the day-to-day life on the Dartmouth campus. The light at the end of the tunnel towards a kinder and gentler Dartmouth includes a note that a recent survey shows that consumption of alcohol and drug use by Dartmouth students is on, the decline; a student-organized recycling program is a model for other colleges; over 1,700 students signed a letter protesting the tactics of the Review.
Meanwhile, back to the Florida East Coast. My vacation time has been consumed by the agonizing perplexities of selling one condo and sparring with a contractor with financial problems to complete a new unit before we head north for the C.O.W. Late in February Roger and Helen Bayles came up from Tequesta to help his brother Jim '34 and his wife, Eleanor, celebrate their 50th at a sumptious spread at Miles Grant. Roger and Jim participated in home-and- home member-guest golf tourneys at Miles Grant and Tequesta C.C., but like your secretary, they also didn't finish in the money. Earlier Roger was a luncheon guest aboard Art Appleton's yacht which had put in to port at Palm Beach for a short visit. TonyMuello, who usually keeps me informed, hasn't reported this year on Art's horse farm in Ocala. I'll catch up with him at our spring mini in Hanover.
F.K.K.'s Florida directory, just received because of U.S. Mail problems, apparently confined its listing to those class people with more or less permanent Florida addresses. As such, it missed various folk, such as MacHill, Terry Staples, Art Pactoris, DonWilliams, and a whole host of Burnt Store Marina habitues, just to mention a few frostbite flee-ers. It is too late now to supplement Frank's work but before the start of the 1990 season I hope we can compile a complete list of locals and transients. Bill Spring reports from Lake Worth that he rarely sees a classmate; don't let this happen to you 1990 is one year nearer to 36 + 55 = 91 . . . June 10-12 . . . Reunion . . . and we all need practice in rapid-fire conversation.
This will reach you in the middle of May. Before you go out to check on the snow peas or feed the roses, please sit down and send your check in to the Alumni Fund. Chairman Clay Mellor is aiming to improve 1936's standing in our Little Green Derby. Last year we raised 95.7 percent of our dollar objective with a great record of 97.7 percent giving —ana yet we were fourth out of six. None of us can run a 10- second 100 or swim the English Channel, but every one of us can sit down and write a check to the Fund of our College of which we have no need to be ashamed
