When last heard from, Ed Flanders expressed high hopes that we would exceed the $1OO,OOO mark for Alumni Fund contributions this year. We had already broken the record for classes 61 years out. As we go to press, the latest word is that we have achieved a record ord-shattering total of $100,138. Congratulations are due all around, and particularly to Ed, who needled us into it.
As the result of a plea by Art Kneerim in the June Campaigner, several more biographical reports have been received. These will be useful, if and when, but writing obituaries is not my only job. News of your activities and escapades would, somehow, seem more amusing to write about. Also, it is a rather large assumption that I will be around to write all those obits. The thought, however, does tend to give one a certain incentive to survive and, I assure you, I shall endeavor to live up to expectations preprandial drinks ana postprandial cigars to the contrary notwithstanding.
Just a year ago, with some trepidation, I faced my first deadline for class notes and wrote my first obituaries. The latter task has not been an altogether melancholy one. It has been an inspiring revelation to discover how many classmates have led useful and successful lives. The Big Man on Campus, in general, has done well, as might be expected, but the large number of those who rarely raised a ripple on Occom Pond or. elsewhere on campus but did very well later on was a surprise to me. It shouldn't have been, of course. After all, they were men of Dartmouth.
While in Naples, Fla., last winter, Marion and George Davis were able to see a lot of Bobbie and Bill Morton and Ellyand Park Chick. All are reported to be thriving. George and Bill were able to compare notes on the fascinating subject of their cataract operations. Other subjects on which they did not see eye-to-eye were not discussed.
Our latest class scholar, Bert Anderson '91, was named to the first team all-Ivy for indoor/outdoor track.
We regret to report the deaths of HankBuchtel on April 18 and Jerry Warner on June 20. OBituaries should appear in due course, but space limitations may cause some delay.
