The marvelously bright, crisp Hanover autumn will be shaping up as these notes are read. Nights are getting cooler, leaves are beginning to turn, and the football and other teams are in town early for pre-season practice on Memorial and Chase Fields prior to official opening of the College. (Remember those fall colors on Velvet Rocks above Chase?)
Some '48s are particularly excited about the new academic year at Dartmouth. BillHartwig's daughter Karen enters her senior year and will be captain and goalie of the Green's champion field hockey team where she has been an inspiring leader. Dick Leggat's son Robbie will be a sophomore seeking a halfback position on Buddy Teevens's varsity eleven. This reporter understands from Ed Curtis that Jack Mahoney still has a daughter on campus, which means Jack will again often appear in Hanover this year. Rod Susen, for years the only '48 resident of Montana who recently became the seventh '48 to take up residence in Texas, having moved with Jamie from Missoula to San Antonio, says he "finally got a Missoula kid to apply." When the youngster was accepted and agreed to enter Dartmouth this fall, it gave Rod the same satisfaction as if one of his own had applied and made it.
Another reason to be back is the number of '48s who now reside in or near Hanover. Legal counselor Woody De Yoe in New Jersey reports he returns to Hanover fairly often, as his daughter Cathie is married to Hanover realtor Ned Redpath whose Main Street office is right above the site of Fletcher's. (Where did you buy and sell your second-hand furniture when you were on campus? Remember that two-buck desk?) Woody reports Ned recently sold a house to '48 VP John Hatheway, just returned from California to become the latest '48 Hanover area resident.
Former '48 members of V-12 should note that Old Sarge George MacGillivray reports that a national reunion of 70,000 WW II members of V-12 will be held in Washington September 28-29. He can be reached at 301/229-3649.
Florida is filling up with '48s. Latest count: 34 classmates now permanently reside there. Four of the latest are Joe Hickman (Naples and Vero Beach), Dr. BillPace (Naples), Ted Thornton (Punta Gorda), and Johnny Wood (Venice). Is a Florida '48 reunion a possibility?
Congratulations to Bill Pace for having retrieved happiness following the tragic death of Sally while on their way to a reunion a few years ago. Two years later he re-met Joie, the widow of old Dartmouth friend Jim Collins '50 and they married. The ceremony took place at Keewaydin Island south of Naples where Bill says 31 of the two couples' 33 descendants were present! Bill and Joie get back to Hanover when they can. Bill reports sadly he recently talked to the late Dave Meeker in Leland, Mich., when Dave was too sick to see him.
Other salutes from Eleazar's mug: to Howie Cook on his retirement in March as vice president of sales of Hershey Chocolate USA after a 41-year career in the confectionary industry; to proud parents Hankand Nancy Mueller, whose eldest son was ordained a priest in May; to John and JeanCameron, recently certified by the University of Florida as master gardeners, qualified for all gardening projects in the sunshine state.
We here note with deep sadness the recent passing on of two stalwart wearers of '48 green, Dick Weaver of Eden and Buffalo, N.Y. , and Charles Zoolalian of Whittier, Calif. Their classmates join stricken wives Norma and Katherine in grieving the loss of two more very good men.
