After a self-styled corporate nomadic life of 25 years, Steve Frank has made it to the top with his appointment to the presidency of Florida Power & Light Co., the Miami-based utility. Formerly executive vice president and chief financial officer of Cleveland-based TRW Inc., Steve replaced the retiring Robert Tallon of FPI. Before joining TRW, Steve had been vice president and controller at GTE Corp., Stamford, Conn., for several years, following a 19-year stint at U.S. Steel in a variety of positions. A University of Michigan M.B.A. with three years in the marine corps, Steve found time during his business career to serve in the Literacy Volunteers of America, a large volunteer organization to combat adult illiteracy. Among the issues he will have to deal with at FPL are longrunning troubles at the Turkey Point nuclear plant and the region's soaring power demands, according to the Miami Herald. Florida is one of the fastest growing states in the U.S.
Less nomadic but apparently as intense, Tom Berger, professor of english and faculty member since 1971 at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y., has been appointed to the Craig Professorship of English there for a five-year term. The Craig Professorship was established in 1972 and endowed in 1973 under the will of you guessed it John Craig of Rochester, N.Y. The position was last held until 1986 by Emeritus Professor George McFarland. A Duke Ph.D., Tom parlayed fascination, joy, and dedication to the study of Shakespeare into a reputation of distinguished scholarship. A few years ago St. Lawrence sent him to London to direct their London Semester, and Tom became almost as fascinated with the royal family, even venturing some commentary to the local press in Canton, N.Y.
Further west, but equally as north, EdBales has moved to Edina Minn., where he is investment research analyst at SIT Investment Associates in Minneapolis. The firm, which handles clients' investments, including stock portfolios, has the University of Chicago M.B.A. covering a variety of industries from electrical equipment, automobiles, aerospace, railroads, trucking, and oil to business services, capital equipment, engineering, and construction. A native of Kansas City, Ed served two years with the Peace Corps in Bangladesh, where he built bridges and earthworks to bind the country's transportation infrastructure together. He started his career covering oil and natural resources for the Amoco Oil Company pension fund, posting a record of performance 70 percent better than the Standard & Poor index over a seven year period. Later he joined Capital Supervisors in Chicago as vice president before his current position. Ed and his medical researcher wife, Anne-Marie, and their children, Caroline 8, and Charlotte 11, recently joined some 35 Dartmouth alumni at the annual party of the Alumni Association of the Northwest at the Minnetonka Yacht Club off Lake Minnetonka. Ed ran into Dean Spatz '66, president of Osmonice, a Minneapolis filtration company, and Tom McBurney '60, a business consultant at the annual event.
