Early in September our venerable mini-reunion chairman, Cube Conroy, whom I had queried about a photo of himself with Teddy Kennedy which I had seen at the Conroy condo, sent the following response: "I can only say that I limit my association with Harvard men to those of Hibernian, Democratic backgrounds. Accordingly, I was at the 'Compound' several years ago for a political fund-raising event. Despite the crowd, both in number and type, there were no casualties."

Perhaps to indicate his basic non-partisanship, Cube enclosed a photo of himself "with a distinguished Republican from Vermont-Dave Stackpole, a long time beer drinking companion of mine. The occasion was my admission as a lawyer in the State of Vermont on May 7,1990, in the Supreme Court chambers in Mont pelier. Dave was my sponsor and put me through a rigorous training process to meet the high standards of that state."

As reported last time, Gordie Lend did indeed stop by Charleston for a quick visit on his way to Florida late in September. He wrote later that it was fun "catching up, hearing about your offspring, munching (delicious) shrimp, walking past South Carolina history, and seeing Dartmouth through your (children's) eyes."

From Charleston, Gordie went on to Stuart, Fla., where he reports he "had a well-received workshop, and paddled my way to Longboat through torrents. Swimming and hanging pictures were equally exhilarating. Then I drove back to Maryland, a bit weary of roads and gas stations." It was great to see him again.

About that same time, I spoke with BillTell, who goes on the Alumni Council this year and should provide another strong voice for the class on that body. About two years ago, with the able assistance of FlintRanney, Bill bought a home on Nantucket Island, where Flint's family and mine have summered for longer than I can remember. Seems there's a growing contingent of '56ers on the Island. Perhaps a mini-reunion is in order.

Quick flash for Tom Fead. Your old friend and former colleague, now my friendly neighborhood optometrist, DickDavenport, is alive and well, having survived the ravages of Hurricane Hugo, and sendshis best to you and yours.

No birthdays this month. 1 hat s my Christmas present to all of you.
