Ron Kley's letterhead sums up his current professional course correction—"Creative Solutions for Museum Confusions." After a 20 year apprenticeship as a curator and registrar in the museum world, he has transferred his on-the-job training in computers to the rest of the world. As the sole proprietor of Museum Research Associates, Ron has taken his expertise into the consulting field. And in October 1989, he was far afield—as the keynote speaker at a conference of the Museum Association of Australia. His life sounds exciting: "I'm certainly rediscovering the joy of new adventure in each new day—and making some small contribution to the preservation and interpretation of the world's cultural resources as well."
In other classmates' course corrections, these news items: After half a career in public service in Washington, D.C., Stephen Gell has taken his expertise in zoning, planned unit development, historic preservation, real estate development, and urban renewal to the world's second largest law firm, Jones, Day, Reavis and Pogue. Steve remains in Washington. On the other hand, Bob Hatch has become a commuter from Kansas City, Mo., to Fairfax, Va. Last spring, Bob left his position as CEO of Interstate Bakeries to assume the more reclining positions of chairman, president, and CEO of Mohasco Corporation, the manufacturers of Barcalounger and Stratolounger chairs. Now he can sit back and relax.
sol Rockenmacher can check out Steve and Bod's tickers with authority now that he has been lected to fellowship in the American College of Cardiology. Of course, they would have to go to Hanover, where Sol is a pediatric cardiologist on the staff of Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center.
probably like many others in the class, Alex ter Weele decided it was time to contribute his talents to the local school system, in this case Fauquier County in semi-rural Virginia, 45 miles west or Washington, D.C. Alex agreed to serve as chairman of a task force studying facility needs for the system's 14 schools and 8,000 students. For someone who is a regional chief with World Bank and who led the mission that reinstated China's universities in the early 1980s, this would seem like a piece of cake. Not so, says Alex. On a national or global scale decisions can be dispassionate. "But here in the county, it's your kids, it's your neighbors, it's your tax base." And so the rock meets the hard place!
A footnote to the last reported chance meeting of Hap Dunning and MartyWeiss in Tanzania. Ten days prior to their encounter, Gene Kohn and Ken Siegel with Judy and Phyllis passed through the same area. Did I miss some "Super-Saver" deal?
