With about a year to go before our 40th reunion, AlMori reported to our class executive committee in February that plans for our three-day return to the campus in June '91 are all but complete. We will be staying at the College's newest dorm complex (Zimmerman), which features a bathroom for each accommodation—no more gang showers! Batch will keep us posted via the newsletter about details, and expect to hear from Jack Sutton, our attendance chairman, and Dave (Hanover) Hall, our reunion treasurer, who will inform us of the fees.
One of the highlights of our reunion will be our presentation to the College of the earliest known picture of Dartmouth Row, which is being purchased jointly by our class and the Hood Museum, where it will be on display next spring. If you wish to contribute to this unique part of Dartmouth's history, Elease send your check to Robert W. Hopins, 6 Pilgrim Road, Darien, CT 06820.
As you know, our class has an on-going series of benefices for some of those who contribute so much to the life of the College and the community around Hanover. This winter, through the signal efforts of BobHustek, we have been assisting the DOC to provide ski instruction and competition facilities for the Ford Sayre Memorial Ski Program, which continues the work begun 50 years ago by the manager of the Hanover Inn, whose enthusiasm for skiing was instrumental in producing so much of New England's ski talent. Today that same enthusiasm is carried on by the DOC, which with our help this winter has offered youngsters greater use of competition equipment (poles, timers), course-grooming machinery, and personnel for coaching and competitions.
News from here and there as life goes on: Dick Halloran is starting a new career as director of special projects at the East-West Center in Honolulu, a research institution which examines issues of the Pacific Basin. Dick is well acquainted with such matters as a journalist who has served as Asian correspondent and bureau chief for Business Week, the Washington Post, and The New York Times. Mike Monroney, of D.C., has also opted for a new beginning after a career with TRW; he is now chairman of the Coalition for Fiscal Restraint, a group of "more than 85 major corporations, trade associations, and citizens' groups committed to reducing our enormous national deficit." Now there's a retirement project! PaulOrth, of Farmington, Conn., says he "may slow down the law practice and get to a few reunions." Tom Trolle, who divides his time between Vero Beach and New Canaan, does consulting from his homes and says that wishes he nad "figured out how to do this many years ago!" Ned Hoeppner, of Glen Ellyn, Ill., is now retired from AT&T after 33 1/2 years. He and Maurine spent part of last fall out in the Pacific Northwest, and then returned home where Ned had bypass surgery in December. We all hope he is recovering well. Jim Culberson, of Asheboro, N.C., notes that he ran into Aland Dottie Mori in Bermuda last November.
Jerry Underwood, up in the White Mountains, says that he "enjoyed the first half of the Holy Cross game" last fall. JohnHoskins writes from Bangladesh, where he serves as the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization representative, to say that he plans to see us all at our June '91 reunion. Jim Robinson, from Chattanooga, is also looking forward to our 40th.
Take care, be good to yourselves, and keep in touch.
