Doing his bit for "glas nost" (and Class Notes), Roger Parkinson, publisher of the Star Tribune in Minneapolis, chaired the committee that organized the visit of President Mikhail S. Gorbachev and his wife, Raisa, to Minnesota. Minnesotans are reveling in the visit "as an affirmation of Minnesota, an anointment of ourselves," the ex-Green Beret told The New York Times. "This is a great state that produced two vice presidents and got to the Super Bowl four times," Roger said. "Then we won the World Series in '87. Now it's Gorbachev, and we host the Super Bowl in 1992." Political events and publishing are an American tradition dating at least to William Randolph Hearst, whose turn-of-the-century fireworks displays were nonpareil.
