Recently, Dan Anzel sent me a very moving piece, "In Memory of David Glasser '55," which by now should have appeared in John Dinan's newsletter. Dan, who has been a Californian since leaving the Hanover Plain in 1955, has recently retired from teaching and administrative duties at the University of Southern California Medical School. After graduation, he did graduate work at the Stanford Business School and the UCLA business school where he received his Ph.D. Among his accomplishments while at USC was spearheading the completion of the Norris Cancer Center at the Medical School. The center contains 150 beds and covers more than 100,000 square feet and is making a significant contribution in the fight against the disease. Dan is now doing some consulting with hospitals, and keeping up his tennis and golf. He has homes in Santa Monica and Palm Springs, a far cry from winter on campus! He reports seeing Barry Meiselman recently and hopes to pay a visit to Dartmouth in the near future.
I had a chance to talk with Steve Altman, who is a very busy attorney in New Rochelle, N.Y. Steve has a general private practice which includes criminal litigation as well as the usual civil matters. He suffered a heart attack in 1988 and is trying to take things a little easier. His son Jonathan '88 is presently in training for the U.S. white water team "somewhere between the Rockies, Wisconsin, and Falls Village, Conn." Steve is an active sailor with a Chance 32 on Long Island Sound which he keeps at Saybrook in the summer. He also enjoys big-game hunting and has recorded two recent trophies. In the fall of 1989 he got a caribou near the Arctic Circle and this April a black bear in New Brunswick. If this is taking things easier, I wonder what he did before. Steve sees fellow lawyers Paul Jacobson from Westport, Conn., and Mark Starr from Carmel, Calif., from time to time.
Switching back to the West Coast, Len Jones who lives in Long Beach, Calif., reports that he too migrated out there soon after graduation and now considers himself a native. Len is working for McDonnell Douglas Corp. in computing systems support. He is now divorced and his only daughter is out of college. Len hopes to be in closer touch with the College and our class in the future.
A copy of a most attractive newsletter from the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, Mich., crossed my desk recently. Inside the cover a column entitled "Message of the Chairman" was from our classmate Robert "Dan" Musser Jr. The Grand Hotel is a family business, started by Dan's uncle and will continue as such since his son, R. Dan Musser III, is active as well. The hotel features theme weekends, gourmet food, fine wines, and especially appealing to my acquired English tastes, high tea each afternoon, a 103-year-old tradition. I am sure Dan would welcome any '55 who happens upon his hostelry. Finally, a personal request. The mail has slowed considerably the past several months. I would appreciate input concerning classmates, including yourself, that would be of interest to the class. Thanks.
