For the nostalgia issue of the magazine, I thought it would be interesting to know what classmates thought was their most vivid memory of our years in Hanover. In an informal and non-scientific poll of people I have seen recently, the most common answer was "learning of the death of J.F.K. freshman year." Everyone remembered where they were and how they learned the news. In second place was "the great blackout." Several people remembered being in the middle of a Hitchcock film in Spaulding and leading a charge to Tanzi's to keep the beer from getting warm when it was clear that all power in town was out. In third place was a wonderful array of fantasy dates I wish had been mine which shared the theme of a particular house party (often at Beta) or road trips (most often to Smith). Interesting what we remember best. And, of course, there were many memories of freshman trips, academic experiences, and individuals who had touched our lives.
Career news from my mailbox this month includes Arthur Linkins's appointment to the board of the First National Bank of Norfolk in Potsdam, where Art is the Dean of the School of Science at Clarkson University. Also, news that John Magee is back in New York with Discount Corporation after three years in London as managing director.
In the holiday letters, good news from Ralph Staley. Ralph and Laura are expecting a third daughter soon. Reading news of how they both juggle their research management positions at DuPont with their young family makes me envy their energy. Good news of a different sort from Rob Dressier in Florida. After a near tragedy in a swimming accident, Rob and Patricia's three-year-old daughter is fine and thriving. While still serving on the Board of Regents of the State University System, Rob is focusing on his law practice after his time as mayor of Ft. Lauderdale.
Your drama critic here has a strong recommendation. Save May 4. Bill Yaggy is organizing a mini-reunion featuring Jerry Zaks' Six Degrees of Separation at Lincoln Center. Penny and I loved it. It is a wonderful evening of theater. For details on the evening, call Bill at 212/601-3018 (home).
Finally, a plea to everyone to remember Sam Ostrow and friends'when you pay bills next. After being chosen class of the year, we want to keep up our leadership position for the alumni fund. Let's make Sam's job as head agent easier and send in those checks and pledges regularly and quickly. Send me your news.
