I expect this issue will reach you early in April 1991, so that you still will have plenty of time to make it up to Hanover for the spring Class Executive Committee Meeting on Class Officer's Weekend, April 26-28. Space may still be available in the '26 headquarters at the Airport Econo Inn in West Lebanon (603/298-8888). Alow-key program has been arranged by Paul Guibord, BillMacurda and the Fernalds (breakfast on Sunday, of course!).
This weekend will be, in effect, a preview of even grander diings to come: the 55 th on June 10-12, for which you all have been deluged with publicity from Joe Cunningham (complete with new vision and a pacemaker) and his super-active committee. Walter Hagen is reported to have said that as we go through life we should take some time to smell the roses—-Now I can't guarantee that roses will be in bloom in Hanover by earlyjune, but the stimulating Upper Valley air is all set to compliment the likewise stimulating gathering of '36ers, still very much "survival with Class." Plan to join us for the festivities, both in Hanover and at Spalding. Just remember, it never rains on the golf course—or on a gathering of '36ers.
Let's move back to the Florida Peninsula. Amongst those deserting the area for the holidays were Ray and Jeri Builter who enjoyed the friendly family fireside in Fairfield followed by a couple of weeks in the crispiness of winter and snow-shine in Hanover. They are now back at 232 Cerromar Way South, Venice, FL 34293 (813/497-2578), and ready to receive your reservations and checks for the 55th. Terry and Helen Staples, having closed out their Malden-on-Hudson estate in favor of the good life at Jonathan's Landing in Jupiter, couldn't resist the call of the North and holidayed with family and friends just outside of New York City. They have made it back to the friendly confine of tennis, golf, boating and bridge just south of here.
I had hoped to see Roger and HelenBayles at the Miles Grant Member-Guest golf outing late in February, but scheduling difficulties prevented his participation.
Bill Gray, shaking off a bout with bronchitis (a normal malady for those who spend too much time in the D.C. area), is now spending the rest of the winter with his brother Don '37 in Bradenton, where he hopes to find a collection of Dartmouth-related activities, some good grapefruit-league ball games, and maybe even a return call on the Babcock Ranch in Punta Gorda. There is no formal '36 gathering at the Ranch scheduled this year, but the show place is open to the casual visitor and if "Babo" is on location, I'm sure he'll find any '36er a pet alligator to pat if you wish.
Mil and Marge Johnson are covering the Southern front with visits in Stuart, Boca Grande and Venice—and several places to be named later. Frank and Gerry Kappler, have scheduled their winter hiatus for the first two weeks in March. There will be others, no doubt, and I hope to see them at the D.C. Glee Club Concert in Vero Beach on March 18.
What is the status of the trip to Greece this fall? The current concerns about terrorism and foreign travel may have put a temporary damper on the plans. But one day, hopefully, the world will return to relative normalcy and we can then enjoy delving into the treasures of antiquity without having to keep our eyes on the gas pump or munitions futures. Maybe the roses will bloom for us to smell sooner than we could expect.
Not just in closing, but really of first importance—DO NOT forget the '91 Alumni Fund and 55th Reunion Gift. Clay Mellor and his merry men will be in touch—beat them to the punch and send in your inflated donation before they knock at your door.
