September 1941. Fifty years ago. It's the top of the home stretch. The Freshman issue of the Daily D reports that Players Prexy Dick Bolton and Jim Idema will have lead roles in the Convocation presentation of The Male Animal. Meanwhile, under the direction of Station Manager Bill Mitchel, Radio Station DBS prepares for its initial broadcast.

On the War Front, Vermont leads the other 47 states with its declaration of war on Hitler as its legislature says the state of war exists so Vermont's sons in uniform should get (and will get) a bonus of $10 per month.

Sid Bull and Stub Pearson get Gallagher scholarships, awarded to undergraduates with Rhodes Scholarship qualifications. AndyWood and Joe Palamountain are named undergraduate representatives of the Council on Student Organizations and Joe and BillUptegrove become undergraduate representatives on the Student-Faculty Lecture Committee.

The Nazis advance on the Leningrad front as war news is featured daily in the Dartmouth. Professor William Robinson says "ending Nazism is war aim enough." The Harvard Crimson calls for an end to isolationism and asks for Hider's defeat.

Jake Nunnemacher is named Director of the Winter Sports Council. And the football team opens with a 35-0 over Norwich. The game had been highly publicized as the Battle of the North Country. In the real batde, the Nazis smash a Czech revolt.

All this in the month of September 1941 as we began our SENIOR year. Fifty years ago.

All of which is yet another reminder for each and everyone of you to mark your calendar for June 12-14,1992, when we ALL meet on the Hanover plain to celebrate 50 years as alumni. YOU be there!

A note from Joe McCormick out in Danville, Ill, wonders how the 1941 two-man security force of Spud Bray and Nelson Wormwood would handle the dormitory problems Joe reads about these days. Joe was elected at the end of our junior year to be chairman of the Inter-Dormitory Council in 1941—42. He gives thanks for the counsel the Council received from Pudge Neidlinger and A1 Dickerson, the Council's liaison with the College.

From the Alumni Records office comes the news of the death of Bill Stockdale in May. Bill was living at the time in Sun City West, Ariz. Bill left school between junior and senior years and joined the army. He returned to complete his studies after the war. Our sympathy goes out to his family.
