Since 1904 Dartmouth has had 58 Rhodes Scholars. Three of the recipients were Phi Bete graduates in 1922, a record unequaled for 46 years. Each Rhodes award allows two to three years of freely chosen study at Oxford.

Ned Bliss Allen, Carbondale, Ill, received an Oxford B.A. in 1926 and a Ph.D. from U. Michigan in 1936. He became chairman of the English department at U. Delaware and an authority on Shakespeare and John Dryden.

Troyer Steele Anderson, Hanover, N.H., son of Dartmouth History Professor Frank Maloy Anderson, got an AM. from Harvard in 1923, an Oxford B.A. in 1925 and, most unusual, an Oxford Ph.D. in 1929. He taught history at Brown, Swarthmore, and U. lowa.

John Porter Carleton, Hanover, N.H., played football and tennis, somersaulted off the ski jump, and was 1922 class marshal at commencement. He studied law at Oxford and practiced in Manchester, N.H. In World War II he served in the U.S. Air Force, became a major, and received a bronze star and a presidential unit citation.

These three classmates left us long ago, but the hill winds will never forget their names.

The only other Dartmouth class with three Rhodes scholars is 1968. To them 1922 softly says, "Welcome to the club, and cordial thanks for your competition."

And now gratefully salute Ray Atwood,Gray Bates, and Carroll Dwight who have never failed in their annual contributions to the Alumni Fund for 70 vears.
