Class President Bob Serenbetz is at the forefront of technology. As newly named president and chief operating officer of DNA Plant Technology, an agricultural bio-technology company based in Cinnaminson, N.J., Bob is faced with the task of making money while making better products for us all. One example is a venture with Intermountain Canola Company and Eagle Snacks (part of Anheuser Busch) to sell Cape Cod potato chips made with canola oil to keep saturated fat to a minimum. Sounds good all around. Bob was previously head of WarnerLambert's American Chicle Division.

Also on the go and involved in new technologies is Bob Bryant. After years in big corporate America, Bob is providing marketing and general management services to companies on a contractual basis. He's now acting CEO for United Identification Systems Corporation of Newark, Del., which has developed a system for tracking people and equipment using signal-emitting badges, receivers, and patented infrared technology. It's been applied to hospitals, nuclear research installations, computer rooms, prisons, etc. Thayer Hall may be on the prospect list.

The indefatigable Bob is also working with Bliss Corporation on, you guessed it, a slotted hydrofoil aeration system for fermentation and waste-water management. This system can dissolve four times more oxygen for a given energy expenditure than conventional aeration systems. (See what you can learn here?)

Rick, and the rest of the MacMillans, are off to England for two years. Rick, Kris, and kids Clarke 13, Marie 11, and Becki 8 will be living in a 150-year-old mill cottage in the village of Hathersage, near Sheffield, about 20 miles north of London (phone 433-5117, if you're in the area). Why the move? Rick's company, zahlco Environment Systems, bought three U.K. companies last summer and named Rich the group financial director.

Rick's already made contact with DaveHightower, who's been in London for seven years, and we can anticipate mini-reunions in Northern England come fall.

While many of us pursued professions with a goal of monetary gain, Bill Bower is one of our classmates who chose another path. For over 20 years Bill has taught in Boston inner-city schools, and he has also put his athletic talents to good use by coaching several high school teams.

This year Bill's Burke High School football team won its league title, had seven shutouts out of nine wins, and went all the way to the state championship game. For his efforts, Bill was selected Massachusetts Division 5 Coach of the Year. Isn't the Dartmouth head coaching spot open? Bill's wife, Mary Ellen, is also a teacher in the Boston school system, and their two sons (Dick 14 and Michael 11) are fine athletes following in the Bower tradition.

I deeply regret to report the passing of three members of the class: John P. Kelly, JamesW. Heckman Jr., and Dr. Joel D. Myers. Obituary notices will appear in later issues.

Hug your kids, callyourmom, digalitde deeper when someone asks for help, and smile on the elevator. Life's short. And reach out to old friends via this column. You'll feel better for it
