46 Ah, 'tis summer again! "For winter is now past... The flowers have appeared... and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land." No, it's not original. You tell me and I'll send you a copy. Summer here at the New jersey Shore means thousands upon thousands of tourists and few turtle voices can be heard. I hope you all are having an enjoyable summer. Should you venture this way, be sure to get in touch. Now for some news.

Number one item: Tom Adams, our intrepid, competent, tenacious (what else?) head agent reported to me during the first week in June that we were only about $15,000 shy of the 5146,000 goal. He's confident we will make it. Great job, Tom, and many thanks to all of you who gave so generously!

Our man in Washington, Frank J. Guarini, has called it a day. Back in April Frank announced that he would not seek an eighth term. Prior to his congressional service Frank served as a New Jersey state senator for many years. He did a fine job for his constituents in New Jersey and he will be sorely missed. Congratulations, Frank. I must tell you that the New York Times reported he still had $350,000 in his campaign treasury, but the congressman repeated his longstanding promises to donate it to charity. Are you listening Tom Adams? Sorry Frank, but it was in the Times and we all know they are infallible.

"Obie" Obermayer wrote to tell me about his testifying before the GOP Platform Committee in Salt Lake City in late May. Obie is a faculty member at the University of Maryland's College of Journalism. He noted that this marked the first time either major political party heard testimony on journalism education. His remarks seem pertinent to some we hear about Dartmouth and the educational system. If you would like a copy of his remarks, I'm sure he'd gladly send you same. Herman J. Obermayer, 4114 N. Ridgeview Road, Arlington, VA 22207.

Walt Snickenberger reports that he and Bob Kimball drove to York, Maine, to play golf with Jud Hannigan and Dave Saxton, 1951. "Snick" says the golf scores were best left unrecorded. He said the view at Jud's house on the water in Kittery Point is magnificent. Looks out on the Isle of Shoals.

Sanford Gottlieb recently spoke on post cold war problems for the United States. He is senior producer of the public television show "America's Defense Monitor." Don't know where he ,spoke but it was reported in the Daily Dartmouth.

And a note came from J. HowardSchneider, "Duke" he signed it, giving more on the saga of Skunks Misery Road, of Locust Valley fame. He says some Locust Valley booze purveyors sell a brand of gin called Skunk's Misery. My experience with gin leads me to conclude that might be a good name. Duke says the gin's not great, but the label is.

Our classmate Duncan Fitchet died suddenly at his home in Hanover in late April. Duncan held many class offices and was a dedicated Dartmouth man. Our deepest sympathy to his family.
