Cavalcade of News! Three letters, three press clippings, one chance encounter, and one baby to report. Letter number one: EliseMiller sent a seven-page, two-sided letter to Mark, who faxed me only the odd-numbered pages. Before you start feeling inadequate because Elise sent us this voluminous epistle, I should tell you that this was a heavily xeroxed "Dear Friends and Family" letter which she kindly cc'd us on. Hey whynot send your class secretaries a copy of any personalcorrespondence you write to another alum? Elise writes from Mussoorie, India, where she is working towards a master's in education from Harvard. She lives in the Himalayan foothills in a decaying mansion built by early missionaries. The cost is $5 per day, which also covers her meals and three buckets of hot water per week. She has two roommates, a dog, and three servants. Elise has had a number of adventures, including flipping over a jeep, donning the local garb for a Hindi wedding, attending a funeral, and generally seeing, up close and personal, the joys and tragedies of daily Indian life. (Elise started to tell about having met the Dalai Lama, but the rest was on an even-numbered page, which Mark didn't send.) This is the kind of letter that makes a suit-and-tie, commuting urban yupster like me questionmy entire existence.
Letter two: Bob Saylor '86 writes proudly that his wife, Karen Van Ness Saylor, recently received her black belt in Tai Kwon Do after only 17 months of study. Karen will graduate from Johns Hopkins Business School in the fall.
Letter three: Birgit Kohler got her Ph.D. in Chemistry at Stanford and is now working on her post-doc at the CIRES—a joint venture of the University of Boulder and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association. Birgit's fixing the ozone hole, running tests on the CFC content of polar stratospheric clouds, etc. She doesn't know any '85s in Colorado, so if you're in the vicinity, look her up.
Press clipping one: Jory Macomber's family construction company is building the new chemistry building at Dartmouth, Burke Hall. Other Macomber projects include buildings at Exeter and Yale, as well as Fanueil Hall. The $26-million Dartmouth facility boasts state-of-the-art labs, and "132 individual fume hoods." Hey, You can never have too many fumehoods. Press Clipping two: Tiger Shaw, who has been on the U.S. amateur ski circuit for 10 years, is joining the men's U.S. Pro Ski Tour. Go get 'em Tiger! Press clipping three: The New York Times reports the marriage of LisaEisenberg and John Merrill. New Bride Lisa, a Harvard M.B.A., is a product manager for Microsoft. Princetonian Husband John, also a Harvard M.B.A., is a real-estate developer. Ah, Love blossoms amid the market shares andmatrices in Cambridge.
Chance encounter: Met Jay Berkow walking his dog on the Lower East Side. Jay was just about to leave N.Y.C. for Killington, Vt, where he is the artistic director of the Green Mountain Guild summer theater. Try and catch one of his eight (!) shows this summer.
Baby: May I use this space to proudly announce that we gave birth to our second daughter, Clare Robin Joyce, on April 30 (and when I say "we" I mean "my heroic wife, Jeanette, with minimal assistance from me"). Older daughter Emma, now three, has taken this 50-percent decline in parental attention quite well, considering. Ohmygod, I'm a father of two..."And you may ask yourself How Did I Get Here?... Same as it Ever Was Same As It Ever Was...
Enough with the personal asides. Have a great late summer and keep in touch.
