As you read these notes, our College on the Hill will be commencing its 222 nd academic year in the tiny, lovely town which today is not that much different from what we '48s knew so fondly nearly 50 years ago. Hanover's crisp autumn is in the air, the leaves are beginning to change, the bright sky is turning even bluer, and the 111th season of Dartmouth football is getting underway as told by the noise and yells from practices on Memorial Field. Soccer is booming on Chase, the cross-country runners are exploring the long fairways of the golf links and the wooded cathedrals above the Valle of Tempe. Beautiful. Remember?
Bud Gedney advises that Bud Munson is shaping plans for the '48 mini on the Bucknell weekend of October 3. Details from SamWilkinson later. This timing will be perfect for seeing the North Country's Upper Valley at its colorful best as the autumn foliage's single brightest day is almost always during the first ten days of October. If you can be there, don't miss the fun and the magnificent autumn hills around Hanover expected for this gathering of the '48 clan.
During WWII, the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps V-12 units first appeared on the Plain in July 1943. Next summer will be the 50th anniversary of this famous and highly contributive effort in Dartmouth history. EarlChambers and Townes Harris '47 were in that first group and have obtained an agreement with the College to hold a 50th Reunion in Hanover next July 16-18. Please show your interest by sending a card to Earl at 103 Williams St., Providence, RI 02906, or calling Townes at (802) 375-9234 to help with the program. Perhaps you can relive something of that time when all had a job to do for Uncle Sam and were proud of it!
Bob Douglas here in Houston came up with an old photo taken in the Kappa Sig house of Bill Burke, Gino Pierleoni, Jim Schaefer, and himself plus departed pals JackHamiliton, Huck Newbery, and RogerTenney. Bob can't remember the occasion, but it led to a check on Gino who today still lives in his hometown of New Rochelle. Gino says he remembers his Hanover days with much pleasure and wonders how he was lucky enough to choose Dartmouth, where he "received a great education" that has truly served him. He and high school classmate DickRepko roomed in 209 Richardson that famous summer of 1944 before Uncle Sam interrupted things. Back later, Gino and Bill formed a close friendship which extended to each other's weddings still later. Today Gino and two of his nine offspring operate Gino Pierleoni Remodeling in New Rochelle. He and Anita may attend our 45th, his first time back in Hanover since the Fifth in 1953.
Congratulations to '48 Alumni Fund Chief Agent Marv Axelrod and his able accomplices plices for successfully exceeding the '48 quota and for winning the Little Green Derby in the recent campaign. And special thanks to those of you who dug deep at the last minute to assure final '48 success. A high salute from Eleazar's mug!
It is always sad to report the passage to the great beyond of another classmate. Recendy word has been received from Hanover that both Jim Fox of Springfield, Mass., and JohnLanzetta of the Albany area have left us, to the great regret of their families and all of us who knew them.
