"Tho' 'round the girdled I earth they roam" are lyrics written by Hovey with Peter Bridges in mind. After a distinguished career in the Foreign Service, our Ambassador has deployed to Europe once again with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in Prague. MaryJane and Peter could not be with us at Reunion because they had a prior commitment to hike the Rockies with a group. It's like we have our own Ledyard in '53, except that ours graduated, and with distinction. Gute reise, Peter and Mary Jane.
Fascinating news about John Mitchell, who retired recently as a Professor of Business Administration from Elon College. John spent his career in the business offices of a number of colleges, including Wesleyan and Tufts, and came to Elon as the vice president of business and finance in 1981. In the late eighties, he decided just had to get into the teaching business. According to a nice letter from Tom Tiemann '70, it seems John became quite good at it and is now sorely missed by the students. This class has fostered a large number of exceptional and loved teachers. We like that.
Coming as no surprise, Manchester Magazine recently published an article which included Sherm Horton, associate justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court, and Bob Chiesa as two of the"most brilliant legal minds in New Hampshire." We in '53 would extend that to include these United States. "Judge Horton has the ability to calmly and rationally cut through to the heart of the problem and offer sage advice." said the magazine. That has always been true of both of them.
We were delighted to" learn that RalphHeyman has recently been elected to the presidency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Dayton. Ralph has been active in the Foundation for many years. Fie began his illustrious career in law and community service as a Rufus Choate scholar graduating magna cum laude with this great class. Congratulations, Ralph.
Dick "Okie" O'Connor reports from Charlotte that life after General Electric is possible. He has entered into the financial advisory field, for which I think he will find a lucrative market, given the current taxation policy of this administration. Okie and Cynthia hosted Jim and Jackie Cartmell at their place on the lake in New York, indicating that Cartmell is still smiling in spite of the sales numbers on "Golf-Robo-Cart." Trends are looking up, Wheels; keep the faith. We are all starting to golf-walk for survival. The O'Connors and Cartmells are the prime movers behind the Heritage Classic mini-reunion at Hilton Head, at which such distinguished '53s as Don Goss, BillChamberlin, Tom Bloomer, WardHamm, Dave Thomas, Fred Hitt, JayHague, and Jack Huck, new resident, are known to appear. We sneak up there every few years too. Call Okie for details at (919) 493-9861.
Until next month. Keep those faxes, (407) 862-6008, and e-mail, halloran@dmso.dtic.dla coming. Old-fashioned letters, too. "Her spell on them remains."
