Tony Field's new bed and breakfast and restaurant near Hanover are both doing well, he reports. Tony's place, the old Freegrace Teavitt Tavern Restaurant building at 94 Center of Town Road in Hartford features the exquisite Chez Therese French gourmet restaurant, presided over by his wife, Therese Field, and the Anthony Field Gallery Bed and Breakfast. Gallery? "We have received two full containers of furniture from Australia and France. The Inn is now beautifully furnished with antiques, and 200 paintings and drawings are hanging in the gallery, which basically covers the whole house." Tony reports that the place is steadily growing in popularity. "Tim Knox, the headmaster of Kimball Union Academy, comes here for celebrations and brings his VIP guests here for dinner. He is one of our devoted gourmet fans."
In 1992, you'll recall, the class held its Dartmouth Night dinner there, and he's eager to host another or cater a class dinner elsewhere. He also says he can lodge four to five couples at prices competitive in the Upper Valley. All this means, he notes, that you should correct your class directories for his address, "since I am no longer in Australia," to P.O. Box 189, Hanover, NH 03755, and his phone to (802) 295-2922.
Got another missive from Ed Toothaker, who is still seeking a hearing from the College on his somewhat unorthodox views on Shakespeare's sonnet 121. "I ask no one to endorse my view, but I... expect a fair, honest evaluation, and I'm not sure that I'll get one." He sent along a copy of a letter from Dr. James Wright, the dean of the faculty, who said he was turning Ed's pile of documents over to a "distinguished colleague of mine, a member of the English Department" for evaluation. As of yet, Ed has heard nothing.
Did you see that Parker Borg, after all of his years at the State Department, has been appointed U.S. Ambassador to Iceland? I suspect that his watch will be a bit quieter than that of one of our previous class ambassadors SteveBosworth. When Bos was ambassador to the Philippines, he was the one who arranged for the departure of the Marcos government amidst open rebellion. May Iceland be quieter.
True story, two months late, about my freshman experience. I chose Dartmouth sight unseen. I remember being bowled over by the beauty of the campus when I arrived just before freshman trip. I was still trying to find my way around, with my parents in tow, when I wandered into Alumni Gym. For some reason, the Glee Club was practicing I think there was a special convocation of President Dickey's U.S.-Canadian initiative. At any rate, I opened the door to the gym, and this tremendous sound of a Glee Club in full voice hit me in the face. It was so "collegiate," so much what you expect an "Ivy" college to be when you're from the bland Midwest, that it was an encounter that I never forgot.
