Two issues back I asked for you to recall some of the nicknames that we used during our years at Dartmouth. In response, I received the following letter.

"As the former official historian of Gamma Delta Chic, I feel it is my duty to inform you of the myriad of nicknames abounding in that house. Bruce Gale was the 'Sheep,' you remember. Barry McCracken was 'Raccoon,' usually shortened to 'Coon.' Jim Donohue was 'Penguin' often shortened to 'Guin' (pronounced 'Gwan' with French nasal intonation). He didn't like this nickname, however, and began a word-of-mouth campaign to change his name to 'Jaguar.' lan Bruce was, and always will be, 'Bear.' Bob Nadelberg was 'Head.' Brian Conrad was 'Who.' A typical conversation with him might begin 'Hey, Who!' 'What?' Drawing on Suess lore, his name was eventually lengthened to 'Horton Who.' Bill Love was 'Bison' or 'Beeson' (French pronunciation again). I hope this illuminating disquisition serves to fill space in the column."

The above was from Lance Bertelsen, professor of English at the University of "Texas at Austin. He can now add the Dartmouth Alumni Magazine to the list of journals in which he has been published. I would appreciate more such letters.
