Having recently worked on a matter with a top-notch consulting firm, I had already decided that there was something to be said for the business-school route—only two years of studying cases and no bar exam, not to mention the castles in Greenwich and New Canaan. Indeed, I am always struck by how few of those with the option to choose, namely J.D./M.B.A. graduates, ultimately don the barrister's wig. As my preliminary thoughts were quickly devolving into a rather tortured period of self-reflection, I had the misfortune of opening a letter from David and Marcia Crampton, who had moved to Sydney for a year, where David will be working for McKinsey & Cos. David reports that life down under is first-rate and, most importantly, that Margaret Elinor was born on March 22.
Barb Smiley Bula also has news of a growing family; her third child, Erin Margaret, was born last summer. Barb and husband Gerry live in Austin where he is the U.S. controller for Tadpole Technology Inc., a British firm.
We're both somewhat embarrassed to admit it, but after a year Laura Robertson Duncan and I finally figured out we live on the same street. Married with two children, Laura is completing a pediatric residency at Johns Hopkins, where we recently ran into each other. Her husband, David, is a freelance writer. Even with the tremendous sense of fulfillment associated with pediatrics, residencies at Hopkins are no day at the beach, and Laura is handling the situation like most Dartmouth grads: at any given time, she is juggling a dozen competing priorities and always seems to pull it off. Of course, our houses are the only ones in the neighborhood where the grass looks like a 19th century prairie.
