Though Dartmouth did not win its 17 th Ivy League football championship, the 1993 season surely had some spectacular games. For instance, Dartmouth 28-Cornell 27 accelerated Hanover pacemakers. Trailing 27-14 in the fourth quarter, the Big Green went on a 14-point soaring rampage. It began when Cornell attempted a field goal to wrap up the win. Linebacker Matt Feeley '94 blocked the kick, and defensive back Joe Perty '94 scooped up the ball and carried it 85 yards across the Cornell goal. Under a 1988 rule revision, that was two points for Dartmouth. After some stellar defensive help, Jay Fiedler '94 then completed seven of his next eight passes. Andre Grant '95, John Llyland '94, and Dave Shearer '95 made the receptions, and Pete Oberle '96 ground out precious yardage. The team added another classic to Dartmouth football tradition.
Incredibly, it was Dartmouth 39-Harvard 34 the next Saturday in Hanover. The Crimson also led, 28-11, in the final minute of the third quarter. A play for all seasons was the Dartmouth fourth-down 10 at the Harvard 47. Fiedler simply threw a 28 yard pass and on the next play tossed 19 yards for a touchdown. That turned the "wacky, wonderful" game around.
Incidentally, if you happen to think athletics contribute to character formation, you may not object to knowing that the Will to Excel campaign includes specific designation to Athletic Endowment if desired.
Sorrowfully I report that classmate BillPope died September 20. An obituary will follow.
