Dartmouth Night 1993 began with the parade led as usual by Don and Lillian Goss in their Voiture Classique. Songs, speeches, the 1953 telegram, the superb band and Glee Club, a '97 tier bonfire of which the top 30 tiers were tongue depressors to please the Fire Marshall and then the wonderful camaraderie of the Hop and Hanover Inn class receptions. What a kickstart for an eventful, fun-filled, exciting football weekend!
The Dartmouth Night mini-reunion brought 53 classmates to our 353 rd mini-reunion. As best we could determine, they were Ralph and Bobbie Adams, Phil Beekman, Don Bigham, Put and Marion Blodgett, Tom and Arlene Bloomer, Bob Callender, Freddie Carleton, Bill and Betsey Chamberlin, Seth Carpenter, Jim and Shirley Cobb, Al and Nancy Collins, Russ Cook, Jack Crisp, Burt and Trixie Dorsett, Dick Dunham, Dick Fleming, Don and Lillian Goss, Dave Halloran, Bob and Carol Henderson, Fred and Elaine Hitt, Lowell Holway, Dave Horlacker, Bill and Nancyjohnson, Mayo Johnson, Jack Kennedy, Ron and Lilliane Lazar, Larry and Joan Lewis, Elsa Luker, Bob Malin, Jack Newton, Paul and Marilyn Paganucci, Chuck and Donna Reilly, Jack and Phoebe Runyon, George and Patti Sarner, Dave and Bonnie Siegal, Bob and Anne Simpson, Don Smith, Mark and Bobby Smoller, Bernie and Joan Sudikoff, Sal Talamo, Ed Weltman, Tom Wilson, and Jack and Jody Zimmerman.
At the class meeting Fred Hitt announced that the reunion surplus of $ 10,000 was transferred to the class treasury. Chuck Reilly discussed plans for the 1994 Alumni Fund and announced that the class had received the Roger C. Wilde 1921 Reunion Award for "extraordinary achievement in setting the new 40th Reunion record of $1,001,953." Dick Fleming made his debut as the 45th Reunion chairman, and Jack Newton reported on bequests and life-trust options with his now-familiar prophetic "the end is certain" homily. Paul Paganucci and Bob Simpson summarized the progress on the 50th Reunion Trust Fund and reported a handsome balance of $84,000. Don Smith summarized die balance of mini-reunions plans, with special emphasis on the 1994 Colorado Crested Butte Reunion commencing March 2. Bill andJanie Gilges are busily organizing that affair and can be reached at (913) 649-9355. Renewal of the '53 Environmental Intern Student Grant was approved by the class. Dave Siegal reported on the class's Life Crises program, which has been so successful in bringing the "bond of 1953" to classmates and their wives and families during difficult times.
Following the meeting and lunch, we were treated to a come-from-behind victory over Harvard. Put and Marion Blodgett then hosted a warm reception in their perch a spectacular setting and magnificent home handbuilt by our great outdoorsman. Dinner at the Inn, after crawling down Put and Marion's mountain through an October snowfall, capped a warm and memorable time. Some quiet Sunday breakfasts, then the return to reality. Magnificent times, magnificent people.
Though the words have all been said, it is only fitting that we acknowledge and thank the latest three Dartmouth 1953 Alumni Award recipients: Al Collins, Bob Henderson, and Mark Smoller. God bless you and your families for what you have done for Dartmouth, and for the class of 1953.
