We have been in touch with Jane Walker, the sister of George Lugrin, who died on December 7. She advises that George's wife was in the hospital following major surgery in their hometown of Hendersonville, N.C., at the time of his death. Sadly we must also record the death ofWhit Gushing on December 27, Ernie Fetske on January 14, and Hughie McLaren, who succumbed to a stroke on February 16. Finally, Jim Parks wrote us with the sad news that he and Elin had lost their son Robert '70 on February 5 to cancer. (Obits in this or following issues.)
On a lighter note, we are just back from a delightful gathering of 23 folks at BetsyEmmons' digs in Naples, Fla. In attendance were Wells and Betty Bates, Norma Blunt,Jack and Carolyn Cumming, Bill and JoanGreen, Lou and Peg Highmark, Dick andMath Jackson, George and Shirley Hanna,Gordon and Charlotte King, Bert andSally MacMannis, Bill and RobileeTomkins, Larry and Jane Vulte, and Millie White. We took some pics which you may have already seen in '39 Out, assuming all goes as planned.
From California comes word from HarryEdmonson that he and Kay experienced jolts in Santa Barbara from the recent L.A. quake, but suffered no major damage. They celebrated their 5 Oth wedding anniversary last year, and during the year they visited Alaska with the Alumni Education Group. They hope to make the 55th on June 13.
Bill and Bunny Webster, charged with some house-sitting in Bermuda over the better part of the winter months, returned after a few weeks. The house was a bit remote, and Web, who has some hip problems, could not squeeze into the compact cars necessary on that distant isle. So Bunny had to face driving lessons to qualify to drive the compact that went with the house. The crooked, narrow roads and lefthand drive proved too daunting for her, so rather than vegetate in their remote quarters, they opted for a bit more of the rugged New England winter.
This winter Buzz and Jane Waters are neighbors of Andy Ruoff in Tequesta, Fla., and reported on the fine '39 gathering at the Ruoffs' at which the Bobby Alperts, JackCoulsons, and Sam Thurm were present. Andy had kindly invited Math and your scribe to the party, but unfortunately we could not make it.
Finally, although you may have heard it elsewhere John C. and Charlotte S. McClure are doing a book on the late Dave Schilling. McClure apparently flew P-47s with Dave in the 56th Fighter Group, 8th Airforce. He is looking for any information about Dave's pre-military existence, which includes his years in Hanover of course. Anyone who wants to contribute can reach McClure at 2674 Leslie Dr. NE, Atlanta, 30345-1502. Telephone: (404) 939-6420.
